hi all i moved my 5 year old to a new school i November last year due to relocation i then took her out of school for 10 days school holiday. had a fine and paid the 60 since then she has been in school everyday as i got an EWO letter and have been monitored since then i have had a letter saying her attendance is now 100% i have booked a holiday for the end of the month but she will miss 2 days off school due to high increasing prices the travel companies seem to be able to do.. will i get in to more trouble or will i just get another fine like before. any advice please .

To answer your question, I dont think you'll get into more trouble, but it's not you it's your daughter who will feel the consequences of missing 1 in 6 days of her education. This could drop further very quickly if she then genuinely needs time off for illness.

Her attendance is already concerning low- deemed persistently absent.

If there are further unauthorised sessions you may receive a fine.

I will mention that since the latest Jon Platt ruling, courts are not being lenient at all and have been handing out hefty fines (for those who don't pay the £60/120 fine when issues) - in our area of over £1500.. so I'd be careful.

Do you have to give the school a reason? Can you just say your daughter will be absent for those two days ? Missing a couple of weeks or couple of months when you're five is hardly going to make a difference - have a wonderful holiday - the system is bonkers.

I thought system became bonkers because of the people who don't take school attendance seriously....

No because then it would be unauthorised...

She's 5. Enjoy the two days off :)

If your child is only missing 2 days of school, it is better to just say they are sick and you are keeping them home. Less hassle for the school. If you say you are going on holiday, then it becomes all this extra paper work and fines. Missing two days for holiday is okay, missing 10 on the other hand is not!

I'd be amazed if the school authorise it anyway, given it's not exceptional circumstances and her already low attendance plus your previous holiday.

Wolfiefan · 02/05/2017 13:28

That's really low attendance. It's tough luck that prices go up in the school holidays. It's called supply and demand.
Don't go, have a cheaper holiday or save for a holiday in the school holidays.
Two term time holidays in one year is really taking the proverbial.

I do wonder if OP would be getting the same criticism if they had kept a child at home for the first term or two of Reception until they reached compulsory school age?

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 02/05/2017 14:04

Technically that would affect the child's attendance though as they wouldn't be in school.
