Moving schools - and I'm confused!

We are moving from Scotland to England in May. I asked on here a while ago about DS1, and was told he would go into Yr5. However, my friend who teaches at a school in Cambridgeshire told me that after the summer holidays,DS1 - who will be 9 in March will go into Yr4, and DS2, who was 7 in January will go into Yr3.
Is this right? I'm really confused now, at the minute DS1 is in primary 4 and Ds2 is in Primary 3.

Year 4 is for 8 year olds rising 9 (i.e 9th birthday before 31st August). Your DS2 will go into Yr2 - 6 year olds becoming 7 between 1.9 and 31.8.

Year R: 4 to 5
Year 1: 5 to 6
Year 2: 6 to 7
Year 3: 7 to 8
Year 4: 8 to 9

That might be right for your ds1 - as Reception seems to be the equivelanet of P1, so Year 1 would be P2, IYSWIM.

Essentailly, your ds1 will be going into his 5th year of schoolong - and will be going into a lass of kids who are also going in to thier 5 th year of school (reception plus 4 years).

definetly right about ds2 (7 in jan 07)will be year 2(infants) until july07 and move to year 3(juniors) in september for the new school year

prettybird · 05/03/2007 11:33

I think at this age, you need to ignore the ages (Scoitths kids have different cut-off dates) and go by the number of years schooling.

Wouldn't it be easier for the whole country if they all started school at the same age, on the same day and had the same year groups.

So, if i have understood this correctly {hmm], DS1, who will be 9 in March will go into year 4 in September 07, and DS2, who was 7 in January will go into Yr 3?
Yes?

No - if 9 in March then Yr4

saltire · 05/03/2007 11:41

That's what i said

DS1 (9 in March) will go into yr4 in September
DS2 (7 in Jan this year) will go into Yr3 in september.

Do you mean he will turn 9 this month? If so, he would be in Year 4 at the moment, and start Year 5 in September.

DS2 will be in Year 2 now, and start Year 3 in September.

throckenholt · 05/03/2007 11:43

I would have thought there would be 2 years between them.

DS2 in yr3 and DS1 in yr5 in September.

singersgirl · 05/03/2007 11:47

If he's 9 this month, he'll go into Y5 next September. The children in DS1's Y4 class this year all turn 9 between 01/09/06 adnd 31/08/07.

Your DS2, 7 in January, will go into Y3.

How is he doing academically and socially Sltire? WOuld he cope with being pushed ahead a year? And what about ds2?

saltire · 05/03/2007 12:04

DS1 is okay academically, but socially , well I'm not too sure. He is ok with a certain group of friends, but gets very stressed in different situations. He has been at this school since sept 2002, when he started nursery there, then has done P1,2 and 3 and currently in P4. He also gets upsety very easily, cries about silly things etc. I worry how he will cope with secondary school, especially as he will be going a year earlier ( after yr 6 as opposed to after p7)

As for DS2, well it's going to be a nightmare, he hates school with a passion. He doesn't concentrate properly, stares into space, talks, is always being sent home with work to do that he hasn't finished in class on top of his homework.

I owuld there lok into them going into Year 4 and Year 3 respectively in Spetember - no point in over stressing them.

That's the correct year in terms of the number of years UK education they have had.

WOuld they be going into school at all in May when you move? ie would they be doing the end of Year 3 and Year 2 wat their new school?

marmiteontoast · 05/03/2007 12:47

In my experience, you don't get a choice about which year your child goes into; they go with children of same age, irrespective of extra tlc needed, unless they have major SN.

Saltire - you probably already know this web site here but it does specifically say

"If your child is affected by different starting ages between Northern Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland you should contact the school in the first instance - speaking to the Headteacher may sort any possible problems out. If not then you should contact the local education departments or boards, contact CEAS for further advice or speak to the local School Liaison Officer."
