D'ya know .. sometimes your kid does things you feel you should be proud of but they actually make you feel like Poncey McPonce of Ponville Heights

.. as I posted on another thread .. but think I'll give it its own so that more people may laugh at me

DS (6) has chosen the character he would like to go to school as on Book Day

last year he was the red power ranger

this year he had a choice of pirate and cowboy costumes .. although we almost had knights (again fine)

he has chosen

and the choice is

THESEUS

so when a snot-nosed brat comes in in a toga with a dagger and minotaur head made out a papier mache .. just stop for a moment and think

its not always the fault of Alpha competitive mum .. sometimes the kid just happens to like Greek myths ... snurk

indignatio · 25/02/2007 14:08

Yes - but who introduced him to greek myths - I blame the alpha mother

Porpoise · 25/02/2007 14:17

Oh sympathies Twiglett.
Think you Ds and mine have read the same book!
He insisted on being Zeus last year
With cardboard thunderbolt...
Some of the other mums still give me THAT look...

I bet when dd is older she will make up for it, and want to go resplendent in nylon Disney Princess monstrosities

Twiglett · 25/02/2007 15:02

oo you just reminded I need to get her more fancy dress stuff ... she only has a tiger, power ranger and fairy dress and she seems, unlike DS, to relish dressing up

I have convinced him out of Theseus .. which I'm slightly sad about ..

my reason for doing so is that a toga is a dress / skirt .. and 6 year old boys (and older boys in the special assembly) might take the mick and I don't want him ever to feel bad .. ever

wrong move?

ha ha ha ha that is FANTASTIC! Theseus! I love it! Bravo!

My ds (aged 2 and 2 months) was thrown out of his speech therapy appointment when she handed him a little mug and said "ooh, is there tea in this cup? can you say cup of tea?" and he peered into it and said "Nooooo, that's not tea, that's a cappuccino"... he he he

Well he wasn't saying a WORD when the appointment was made 2 months previously

PrincessPeaHead · 26/02/2007 12:20

no no no no!

He MUST be Theseus!

frogs · 26/02/2007 12:29

Heehee. Dd1 in Y5 went as Sheherezade. Totally her idea from start to finish. Unbelievably enough, she actually won the overall prize for best costume (tis a rough-ish school, wouldn't have expected anyone there to have heard of Sherezade, tbh).

puddle · 26/02/2007 12:32

No - you have to let him be theseus! The minotaur head and dagger will add cred even if he is wearing a dress!

ds is going to be lancelot this year, having decided that no-one in his class would know who Hiccup the Useless was.

Aloha · 26/02/2007 12:34

My dd sits at playground saying 'I am drinkin' my chino!'

As long as he wears his toga over his trousers I'm sure he'll be fine Twig.

Twiglett · 26/02/2007 12:37

I merely pointed out to him as we were reading his superheroes book that some children can be really silly .. and might think he was wearing a skirt even though all the greek heroes wore togas

and I left it up to him to decide

Nothing but nothing would convince him to wear a toga to school now

.. he said "xxx wouldn't because he'd know better, but yyyy and zzz would tease me because they're very naughty"

he has decided to go for St George (and the dragon) instead .. same book, equal slaying of monsters but he gets a sword rather than a dagger and a knight's tunic rather than a toga

oh and we're changing the papier mache minotaur into a dragon by the speedy addition of a snout (in the shape of the cardboard slip on an M&S chicken tikka masala )

ROFL! This really takes me back. When ds1 was 5 and had to dress up for world book day, he chose ...

a palaeontologist [sp?]

suedonim · 26/02/2007 19:53

Theseus, lol! 10yo dd is mad for mythology. She informed me the other day that if she hits me on the head when I have a migraine Athene will rise up out of my skull!

I think her ponciest moment must have been shortly after we left Indonesia, when she was 6-ish. We were in a synagogue in Los Angeles where ds1 was to marry a Jewish girl. An elderly lady came up to chat and asked dd where she'd been, meaning in LA. Dd piped up 'I've been to Jakarta.' and this poor lady sort of reeled back in astonishment!!
