Transferring school records to new school

Can I ask how long it takes to transfer a child's school records from one school to the next. It seems to take weeks / months but I don't understand why. Current school say they have asked former school several times. Current teacher would like to see his previous assessments, and I would also expect this to be the norm - Is it straightforward? - or does it have to pass through head teacher or local authority - please give me an idea of process and would it help if I contacted old school. There were no other agencies involved or SEN - so I can't understand the delay. Thanks

No it's literally passed over so sounds like the old school is being awkward/not prioritising this. Calling them may help.

It can be immediate or never. I've had children's records arrive before they do and chased up others until it was pointless.

With every school using different assessment "measures" I'm not sure how helpful the information is. I've had three new starters in the last week and have done my own baseline assessment as a starting point.

There is also no rules about what can or should be passed over.Somethings obviously, statutory assessments, SEN, safeguarding, personal file. But some schools send on exercise books, spelling folders, termly tests, art books, scrap books, the lot! Others don't! As Mrz says, each school can have its own assessment system, so a 2D in one school may well be completely different to a 2D in another ( if they have D's at all!),

Thank you - that makes it clearer Mr Z. And Spaniel I see your point - teacher has just completed his own assessment - and it seems in line with what I expected but I just thought a child should have full records - history where possible - even if there is no direct correlation . Thanks

Quite often, all we get is just an electronic record of KS1 assessments!

My child moved school in year 2, he's now year 7 and his records never showed up. I asked his old and new school for months but gave up in the end. There's no record of his year 2 says which has annoyed me.
