Any recommendations? He loves wildlife and the obvious choice would be the junior National Geographic, but this has some bad reviews. Any other ideas? Or maybe the grown up BBC wildlife magazine?

The Beano? Seriously. I know it's not wildlife, but for creativity and humour it's brilliant and the kids fight over whose turn it is every week.

Also Aquila, Horrible Histories. We tried Nat Geog but the kids found it a bit flat.

CalypsoValdez · 09/12/2016 12:12

Mine really enjoys The Week Junior and How It Works but they're not wildlife mags.

NigelMolesworth · 09/12/2016 12:14

Another vote for The Week Junior. It's excellent.

notanetter · 09/12/2016 12:16

This is super.

We're subscribing to Aquila for DS I think. Never heard of it before yesterday but it looks great!

I nearly went for NG but read a review complaining how full of ads and actual text it is and I thought yes, they've got a point! Will save it as an occasional buy for train journeys I think. If he loved wildlife specifically then I might have gone for it anyway.

What's The Week Junior?

NigelMolesworth · 09/12/2016 12:26

Current affairs magazine for 8+ years, although DD2 reads ours and she is 7. Covers all the main issues of the day in a very sensitive way but also has pages on films, apps, animals, hobbies, funny stories from around the world.

It's basically a kids version of The Week which is aimed at adults.

toptomatoes · 09/12/2016 12:28

DS (yr 5) gets First News and loves it.

DataColour · 09/12/2016 12:38

We have The Phoenix and DS 8 loves it.

atticusclaw2 · 09/12/2016 12:39

Mine love First News

Nateismine · 09/12/2016 14:23

Thanks all. I think the Phoenix will be a winner now and maybe this week junior next year. Smile

I'd suggest "How it Works" magazine....

TheLongRoadToXmas · 12/12/2016 14:54

Aquila is a big hit here - she's tried The Week and First News (school gets them) but they don't quite hit the spot. I think if she was more into factual stuff they would work, but what she Iikes is fiction, craft, puzzles, and having a theme for each issue.

cakeycakeface · 12/12/2016 15:44

This keeps popping up in my FB feed. It looks fab. My DD is still a bit young. Not wildlife though.

My DD gets Whizz Pop Bang and loves it. There is some wildlife in it (Tardigrades in the last issue) but its not focus. However, there is plenty of hands on science which my DD loves.

cakeycakeface · 13/12/2016 13:21

mrsmortis - Is whizz pop bang too old for a five year old?

Hersetta427 · 13/12/2016 13:41

I have a nat geo kids sub for my 5 yr old. he loves it and is easier for him to read than the full bbc wildlife madazine which he loves too.

Hersetta427 · 13/12/2016 13:41

By the way you can get the nat geo kids annual sub with Tesco clubcard vouchers.

mrsmortis · 13/12/2016 13:57

cakeycakeface - it's aimed at KS2. So it might be. However my YR DD2 likes it. And she and her sister often giggle together over the christmas cracker style jokes on the last page. We also all do the science experiments together (putting an egg in vinegar, making dye by boiling cabbages etc. There are some longer articles that may not hold the interest of a 5 year old but nothing longer than a double page spread.
