Yet another rule change to fuck up my life

I took DD to dodgeball before school today, we aren't allowed in the playground before 8.30, apparently we're now not allowed to wait in the office either. DS and I played in the park. Great, but what about when it's raining/snowing? It takes 30 minutes to walk to school, so no time to walk back home.

So dd does dodge ball at school 0815 to 0845 but you cant go in the playground with ds until 0830? Presumably dd goes straight through after didge ball?

Can you wait with ds in the dodge ball location?

YonicProbe · 18/11/2016 07:49

The rules have probably not changed re waiting in the odfice, someone has probably just noticed its happening

Rubberduckies · 18/11/2016 07:55

I get why it's annoying, but why should teachers start earlier (for no more pay) just so they can supervise the children that have been dumped each morning? DPs school have just changed this too, gates are locked now in the morning because so many parents were just leaving their children and expecting the teachers to be supervising!

But teachers are just glorified babysitters. They should realise that part of their duties should be to be there early each morning so no one has to sit around for 15 minutes with their own children.

I thought my ds' school was rare case. Clearly not. I am quite amazed so many parents don't use their common sense and can be so selfish.

MidniteScribbler · 18/11/2016 08:50

I had one parent who wanted me to stay back until 4:30 each day, because she couldn't pick her child up until then because she wanted to go to a 3:00 gym class twice per week. She refused to use the on site after school care because they wouldn't charge her just until 4:30 (they have a flat rate until 6:30pm). She really couldn't understand why I wouldn't stay with her child for an extra hour after school to suit her.

I've also had parents ask if I'll 'babysit' over the school holidays.

Wellthen · 18/11/2016 11:58

I'm going to buck the trend slightly and say I don't see why the dodgeball parents can't be allowed onto the playground a little early. If other parents complain it's not fair then you explain that they can simply leave home 10 mins later whereas the dodgeball parents have to wait around.

However I will also join in the general moaning about 'those' parents who spoil it for everyone. I used to see the same parent EVERY day last year, sorting her child's things in the nice quiet cloakroom and then popping in to say a 'quick hello' to the teacher. If her eldest's teacher wasn't there or asked her to go back outside she when to the younger one's teacher. All the while her toddler is running up and down the corridor. It's absolutely maddening. It's impossible for any school to have a true 'open door' policy because of nonsense like this.

I find the behaviour of the parents far more shocking than the children and have never taught in a school where there aren't done like this.

Our school, playground are open from 7.45 when breakfast club opens but never the building until 8.45 when all doors open. You Have to cross playground to go to BC. Office hatch is open for early morning queries. You do see DC who are quite young being dumped in the playground and left hanging around outside unsupervised by parents that won't pay £2 and would rather leave an 8 year old stops alone in the rain, out of site of the office or BC staff.... School line is that there is no supervision before 8.45 unless they are at a club with a teacher or in BC.

bigkidsdidit · 18/11/2016 19:48

I have to walk the streets with my three year old while my older one does activities. It's a pain in the arse. Normal though.

Floggingmolly · 18/11/2016 19:57

It's the same with after school activities though, isn't it? I'm more shocked that you used to be allowed to sit and wait in the office than the fact that they've now stopped allowing it.
Imagine a potential 30 parents plus siblings meandering round the building out of school hours?? Confused. Of course that can't happen.
Maybe you weren't actually allowed at all, they just didn't notice you? (which would be worrying in itself)

smellyboot · 18/11/2016 23:51

Good point re after school sports .. Yep. Collect one child and then wait for the other,...

mrz · 19/11/2016 06:41

", we aren't allowed in the playground before 8.30, apparently we're now not allowed to wait in the office either. DS and I played in the park. Great, but what about when it's raining/snowing? "

Do you mean you aren't allowed to leave your child in the playground or that there us no access to the playground before 8.30?

Surely playing in the park is no different to playing in the playground in bad weather

FarAwayHills · 20/11/2016 09:35

The school is not insured for this and cannot be responsible for kids running around the playground outside of school hours. If there was an accident and your DS was injured they would be liable. It's also a security issue - the school can't have parents wandering around the premises unaccounted for.

jamdonut · 20/11/2016 11:10

I'm really confused by this...
Dodgeball starts at 8:15...so presumably you drop her off at the office and they let her in for the dodgeball session.
So...why does it matter that the playground doesn't open till 8:30????
Presumably she goes straight from dodgeball to her class?
If you have a half hour walk to school, maybe don't set off so early, if you are getting there too soon??? Confused

Wondermoomin · 20/11/2016 11:36

Isn't it just 15 minutes that you have to kill between dodge ball drop off (8.15) and being allowed access to the playground (8.30)? I don't see the big deal. I have a 15 minute gap to fill 3 mornings a week, it's not hard (even if it is raining). It's the 1 hour gap I have to fill in the afternoons that's trickier but I would never expect the school to accommodate me for any part of that....
