What age / year for these spellings

Just to settle a "discussion" with my oh - what age/school year would you think these spellings are for?

Year 1 or 2?

Year two

Year two or three

Similar here-year 3

I think they do cious and tion in year 1. I would guess year 2 but could be 1, 2 or 3.

Year 2, really?
My DD is Y2 and getting things like flight, rude, tail/tale, dream.

I would say year 3 to know how to spell, year 1/2 to know how to read

Aren't these read, wrote, inc? If so they like children to finish the spelling program by year two so these would be included

Maybe its just RWI they do tion and cious in year 1/2 then.

I would say year 2, but could be anywhere between yr 1 and 3 depending on the scheme.

Do you know what those pages are from? It looks quite impressive.

It's the National Curriculum.
In Y2 you teach -tion spellings but would probably stick to two syllable words.

My son is year 2 and has spellings similar. Has to also use similar words in his story writing

Year 1s should be taught 2-syllable words. More than 2 syllables seems like a reasonable progression for year 2.

Year 3/4

It's Ruth Miskin RWI so year 2. However, as a teacher, I have had children in year 3 and 4 in my groups who would not be able to read and spell these words.

The words are from Grey level RWI with tious cious and tion spellings. The matching reading books are 'A Celebration on Planet Vox' and 'A Very Dangerous Dinosaur'. It's the last RWI level which is designed for the end of Y1, with Y2s going on to RWI Language and Literacy. In reality the last grey group I taught had a mixture of Y1 to Y4, with the majority being Y2.

Thanks all, interesting to see the variations. My youngest who's 5 and in Y1 brought these home tonight and read them with no hesitation. I was trying to show my oh that their standard of reading was pretty good.

At my DCs' school, those words could crop up anywhere in the spellings between years 1 and 6, depending on ability. Also, the words jump from easy to hard and back again randomly from week to week, and sometimes from year to year! We had words like exceptional in year 1 and then House in year 4. Seems to be no logic in it!

Those sounds are part of the Set 3 that children start learning from Orange level onwards in the Speed sound part of the phonics lesson, so by Yellow level they should hopefully recognise them quite confidently. Good stuff!

The spellings are similar in complexity to what DS is getting in Y3 but they're not picking apart syllables for them like that, and they don't generally seem to need the sound buttons either at this stage. Maybe slightly more obscure words. So I'd have guessed Y2.
