Dd 5 in Jan is on stage 2 group 3 phonics is this about normal for her age. She does have a slight speach problem that effects her pronunciation of things e.g toffee for coffee, pole for Cole. Other sounds are effected such as r l there is others to they are just a couple

Sounds normal, but they are all at very different stages in reception. It was stressed to us, by the school, that we shouldn't compare what books our child is bringing home.

Are you concerned? Do you think she is behind?

My ds also has speech problems (we saw s&l therapist) the daily phonics practise is helping tremendously, but I do think when he reads words wrong sometimes it's down to his confusion with speaking rather than reading. It will all fall into place though, they are still very young.

We are waiting on speach and language therapist sessions and going for a hearing test Monday as part of them.

You can go privately for speech therapy. You can also claim on your medical insurance for the cost, if you have it. Otherwise waiting lists can be long.

I think many schools are teaching them all together at this stage so the stage doesn't really mean anything about her specific ability. DD's class are at a similar stage to what you describe.

Speech shouldn't hold her back as far as reading goes though, she will likely just decode those letters to her own pronunciations rather than standard ones.
