School trip to local sewage works :(

So a letter came through today stating that an 'exciting' school trip to the local sewage treatment works has been organised for my sons' year (year 6).

This is the only school trip this year and the other local schools have been to places like the Harry Potter studios or the Natural History Museum. I can't help but feel really disappointed for them especially as its their last year before secondary school.

Where have your children been this year?

My DD1 (7) went to the local recycling centre last year. They had a brilliant time (nothing to do with the fact it's also the local salt store and they got to 'sledge' down the mounds of salt) and they learnt lots. She talked about it for weeks afterwards. Don't knock it.

We did the sewage farm when I was 11 - it was one of the most interesting school trips ever!

OverScentedFanjo · 18/10/2016 11:42

My Parents went once to the local sewage works as they had some sort of open day.

They came back saying how interesting it was, they talked about it for ages.

Ha! I remember doing this in year 6. We went to visit the sewage works which were literally across the road from the school, so not even a minibus.

It doesn't stand out as being the greatest day of my life.

oh dear. My daughters Y5 class is going to happy potter studios next month - they are ridiculously excited - party of their topic on magic, mystery and mayhem!

NotYoda · 18/10/2016 16:50

Do people only have one trip a year?

MadrigalElectromotive · 18/10/2016 16:54

Dh went on a school trip to a sewage works. I know this because it's the only school trip he's ever talked about! It might make quite an impression on your dc.

NeverNic · 18/10/2016 18:24

I went to a power station. Best trip ever!

Our Year 6 go to Paris......

We went on a trip to our local sewage treatment works when I was in primary school. So nearly 30 years ago. It was absolutely fascinating. They were so good with us. We got slips for our shoes, soft clips for our noses and mini overalls. It's my favourite ever school trip. Keep your Camelot and Knowsley safari park. I'd happily let my kids go.

Flingmoo · 18/10/2016 19:34

DH and I once paid to go on a guided tour of Brighton sewers, fascinating Victorian system of tunnels under the city, really interesting! Bit pongy though!

sonlypuppyfat · 18/10/2016 19:45

My DD did the cinema, Legoland, Cornwall which is 5hrs from us, Royal Shakespeare theatre, PGL, Wimbledon on finals day and a local country park. I think all these trips cost about £50 and that was for everything

Friend's ds did this sewer works trip. She said he absolutely stank and everything immediately got washed.

RaisingSteam · 18/10/2016 20:46

Well it's hardly a theme park but will be really interesting and educational and hopefully convince a generation not to flush wipes down the loo! Lack of sanitation is one of the world's big unsolved issues as well.

Are you sure it is the only trip, every primary school I have come across has some sort of residential or fun activities week after SATs are out of the way. Sometimes simple trips are best for learning though, I spent a lovely day with ds's Y5 class doing art and drama activities in a local wood- cost nil as we walked there and the teachers and ta s lead the activities.

MargaretCabbage · 19/10/2016 10:27

We had a trip to the sewage works when I was in primary school, and it was one of my favourite trips ever. It was really interesting and fun!

Amy2104 · 19/10/2016 11:34

I've never been but really wish I had got the chance after reading the comments here!

WreckTangled · 19/10/2016 11:42

Ours are pretty lucky with a trip to the British Museum and a pantomime this term. Last term was a trip to HMS victory and the Winchester science centre.

Ds (pre school) is going on a trip to the local farm to see the foals tomorrow Grin

The older children got to go to the Harry Potter studio last year, poor dd was in year one and wasn't allowed to go!

VenusRising · 19/10/2016 11:55

Are you kidding OP?
I loved our trips to the local sewerage works, hydro electric works, factories etc

These are essential and educational trips. It's absolutely amazing how sewage is processed, and why we should be careful of our precious planet.
These are marks of a civilisation!

I wouldn't pay for a trip to see Harry Potter. It's totally irrelevant.

I think you're being all "pink is for girls" and "boys only like football" actually!
I know loads of engineers, medics and scientists who are women: well paid, and intellectually satisfied women who are happy with their contribution to the world, and their high status.
Even if the kids don't catch the engineering bug, they'll learn not to stuff loo rolls / wipes and san pro down the lav.

Think about it, would you prefer your kids lived and died in cholera ridden Haiti? I bet they'd love a sewerage plant or three there.Sad
Wave your wand at that Harry, eh Hmm

(I hate the daily mail btw.)

RhodaBull · 19/10/2016 16:14

Dd went to the sewage works in Yr 5. She said it was really interesting. And actually that's very high praise from her as she hates most school trips because going round in a huge bunch you can't see anything properly and the only good bit is the coach ride.

JoJoSM2 · 21/10/2016 08:47

Grin it does all sound hilarious but personally I quite like the idea even if it's a bit on the quirky side. Anyone can go to the Harry Potter Studios or the Natural History Museum...
