From reading aloud to reading "in your head" - when?

dd1 is 5.8 and reads well (ORT stage 8), but she still reads everything aloud, even when reading by/to herself, so I was just wondering when will she start to read quietly? Should I encourage it? Does it matter?

my 6 year old still does this, not sure when they stop. I would have thought it'll just come naturally, not sure how you could encourage it.

dd , also 5, does the same. Drives ds (8) mad with her fairy stories!!

Kbear · 06/02/2007 19:50

My DD started reading to herself in Yr 2, so about 7.

I remember actually pointing out to DS2 that he could read silently if he wanted; he maintained he couldn't, but I knew he was already reading in his head from things he'd said. It was as if he didn't want to admit it. He has been quite an early reader though.

For DS1 sustained silent reading was definitely in early Y2, so he was 6 and a bit.

Emkana it will kick in any day now. Probably without you doing anything at all.

Both my dds aged 5.5 and nearly 7 do both, when reading to themselves. I think it's quite sweet when you go past their room and hear them reading out loud to themselves.

I would imagine it would develop of it's own accord. As a child I rather scornfully accused my Dad of "just looking at the pictures" in the Radio Times.

DD is a very able reader and the reading in her head thing had kicked in by the time she started reception. She was happily reading Rainbow Magic type books at this point, if that's any indication. She then went through a phase of loathing reading aloud which caused a few problems at school but she now accepts it's a "school thing" and does a good job with performing (different voices for different characters and so on).

Its year 2 so around the 7yr age but if they read silently to them selves too early its not good because they pronounce things wrong in their head and it dosnt get noticed .

mine around 5 1/2 or 6 ish.... think it depends on individula child and their reading stage... wouldnt stress over it for a minute. enjoying boks is the most important thing imo.

ddis 5.6 y1 was told she had to learn to read silently, when reading to herself. she just couldn't get it, I stop trying and now about 3 months later she has just suddenly gone from reading out loud to silent reading.I still do get her to read aloud to me, just to make sure she is reading the book and not struggling. Most books she reads roughly half aloud to me and the over half to herself. You just have to wait it will come on it's own. She does colour book bands at school level white (roughly stage 10/11 ort.)

But it doesn't matter. Very few adults do it!

I was wondering this recently, after I asked dd to read to herself and not to me while I was trying to read. (dd's almost 6) She said ok then carried on as normal maintaining that she was reading 'in her head'

But I have noticed the last few weeks that now when she's reading herself she just kind of mumbles a bit, not saying everything out loud iykwim so I predict complete silence while reading will come soon!
