We are thinking about setting up a walking bus at our primary school and was wondering if anyone has any experience of setting them up?

There was a thread on this last week, if you do a search you should be able to find it.

Plan the route you want it to take and then contact the road safety centre department of your local council, someone will come and do a risk assessment for you. They should also be able to offer training for your walking bus leader.

If i remember correctly the ratio is 1:3 for children under 5 and 1:6 for over the age of five. Best to check though.

Your volunteers will need to be CRB checked and the parents of the children using the walking bus will need to sign a consent form and a health and safety form (again the road safety centre should help with that)

You will need someone to have first aid training and a small first aid kit and contact details for parents/carers.

You will need to make sure that parents are aware of your policies on lateness for the bus and if they are not there at the other end to meet child at end of the day (this was often our biggest issue)

Also make sure you have a policy for volunteers to let you know if they won't be able to make it so you can get cover.
