Year 2 and reluctant reader.

Ds is in yr 2, he's the oldest in the class. Turned 7 last week.
He's on the red books for reading and at the lowest level in his whole class. I know as I volunteer listen with them all.
He reads a page every day, but he hates it and is very reluctant and it takes ages to just get him to read a sentence.... Hence the only 1 page.
Also from being a volunteer listener I've also noticed from the other kids reading diaries that ds reads the most at home than any of the other kids.
So why is he so behind? I'm getting so frustrated with him that I sometimes get cross.
Does it just come naturally to some?

Project x starts at a very simple level - if he knows lots of sounds and can decode he will be able to access it. Ask school if they have any resources - it's very good for reluctant readers (I was guttered when we had to change groups to give more children the intervention as the first group cried when they had to stop! Luckily they could do it again later in the year but these kids hated reading before this!)

If you can have a chat with the SENCO at school, they may be able to access assessments for him.

We ultimately paid for private SALT, EP and OT assessments for DS, and their reports are so helpful to us in understanding what DS struggles with, and things that are most likely to help him. I would imagine a SALT would be the place to start for your DS.

Dd was more or less a non-reader until Y3. Everybody was miserable until we took a huge step back until the whole reading thing finally clicked.
She is now in Y6 and absolutely fine, reading books like "Wonder" for fun.

I'll have agood look at project x thanks.
Yeah he knows all of those sounds coconut he's fine with sounding out words. I just can't seem to get it to stop sounding out! But it seems like he needs to do it to help him.

I'll chat to senco about dyslexia

Ooh, the books I linked are also Project X, with the same kids, so if he likes the earlier ones, he will probably then like the ones I linked down the line.

My boy is very much like this. On further investigation it looks as though he has a processing problem, hence he forgets what he's just read, even if it was recreated over and over.
He's leapt forward lately though thanks to minecraft as he worked out that he could do it better if he read the words, and is remembering them better because there's an instant and lasting pictorial result.
School have tried a couple of new methods including moving him to Oxford Reading Tree but he just doesn't seem to be a phonics reader.

We bought some "magic" pens for writing secret notes and colour changing etc and he's started writing us little messages which is lovely.

Thanks isitme

That's really sweet dolly
I don't think ds has any processing issues. He seems to be capable at other tasks and instructions. He's good at maths, but a bit slow.

I spent a good chunk of the afternoon in the local library choosing some early reader books today, and a chapter book for us to read together me to read
With the chapter book (david walliams one) I gave him a word - windy - and that was his to read. This worked well and kept him engaged so I'll try 2 words tomorrow eve!
I also found some lego early reader books so hopefully in the morn he'll be keen on having a go!
