I'm just wondering really as DS1 still seems to be really struggling with things such as

5+3, 7+2, 5-1, 10-5 etc etc.

What sort of maths can your Yr1 child do - or not do????

Love to come for coffee....but please don't make my brain hurt with scary numbers!

Hesitation on first but fine with others. She can also count in 2's and 10's and is working on making amounts using coins.

Twig at our school the kids are doing it the way you (and I) would have done it - carrying the one. And they are doing subtraction in columns too. This is in year 2 by the way. Someone on a thread somewhere (gosh that's specific isn't it?) mentioned that there is a consultation on KS1 maths that recommends going back to the old system.

bit concerned about dd's maths teacher actually. Another mum told me her ds absolutely doesn't get the maths. She spoke to the teacher about it and the teacher said all the other kids in the class can do sums in their head. They can't! None of them that I know of. In fact the dm told me she called the teacher to complain because the teacher had shouted at her ds after explaining something twice, "am I speaking Chinese or what?!" She doesn't seem to realise that the dc aren't understanding what they're doing.

I noticed that dd had no idea what was going on in maths. She'd just write any old number down. One day she told me she hated maths which is strong language for dd who basically loves all learning situations. So I called the maths teacher to ask if I should be doing something about it at home but never got hold of her, so I bought a couple of books on how to teach primary school maths and taught her myself what she should have learnt at school.

I was a bit freaked out at doing that because I am not a maths lover myself and also not the most patient person around but it did really help. Even just 10 minutes a day. I still have to do it though. Just from what they do in maths class at school, she seems to learn nothing. Not sure why that is though. She spent ages doing sums with markers before she slowly learnt them off by heart. She doesn't calculate in her head, she just remembers that say 8 + 2 = 10.

Fannieannie - how is ds1 with his reading? it's all swings and roundabouts. My ds, also 6, who is in P2 (Scottish equivalent to Y1) is still struggling with his reading, but absolutely loves his numbers (in the P2/3 class for number time).

But we know he'll get there!

SSShakeTheChi · 05/02/2007 10:02

Well that's what I really didn't know - whether she'd just get there in the end by herself. Actually that was really what I wanted to talk to the teacher about. Whether I should just leave it and trust that she'd get there in time or whether I had to do something about it before she was totally lost.

Actually I'm very glad I did tackle it. She said the other day, "Oh mummy I loved maths today because I understand everything the teacher did"

Hi, I hope you don't mind me joining in.

My son is almost 7 (yr2) and is only just managing yr1 work. He does have ADHD, but that aside, it is so worrying when your child is struggling.

I have accepted the fact that he will catch up - it might take time, but with encouragement from me and my hubby, we know he'll be ok.

Very hard though when he knows he is behind and he gets very fustrated. He sees his friends going to yr3/4 classes to do maths and english.

All kids are good at some stuff and not so at others. Difficult and heartbreaking i know.

Just keep soldering on!

I started to try these with dd (6 and in Yr 1) this morning

7 + 2? TWO!

5 + 3 'I'd rather do 5 + 5. That's 10'

clever fecker. Though obviously not at maths

prettybird · 05/02/2007 11:02

SSShakeTheChi - FWIW, I think you did the right thing - from the sound of it, your dd was being turned off numbers unecessarily, and I am glad you've got her enthusiatic again .

We have a wee bit of a similar fear with ds with his reading - but have a good relationship with the school and his teachers, so are able to work with them to try to encourage him.

Fannieannie didn't mention any specific concern with the way that he ds1 was being taught - just that he was struggling.

drosophila · 06/02/2007 21:06

I get very confused with the way maths is taught to DS although he loves maths and has no probs but on occasion I have to help I am baffled. I have pulled out the abacus on one occasion which he had never used at school

lemonysnickett · 24/02/2007 15:29

SSShakeTheChi i have jsut come across this thread. I have similar concerns with my daughter who is year 2. It seems they learn nothing at school. I have just recently started attempting some sats with her and her inability to explain or arrive at the correct answers has really worried me. I too have decided to teach her as much as i can at home. Hope it makes a difference!

Just tested DS who was 6 last Tuesday. He got the first one wrong for ages and then did all the others almost instantly.
