How do I encourage 7 year old to read

My 7 year old son can read, however he does not enjoy it. I love reading and don't want to enforce it as a punishment or use it for him to get rewards. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get him to enjoy reading?

Ooh an interesting point Backingvocals. Well done.

For a lot of seven year olds the process of reading is still a bit of a chore as they are still having to work on decoding difficult words. I wouldn't worry about the fact he isn't reading for enjoyment at the moment. Read to him every night, mainly stories that he has chosen himself from the library/book shop. You will be enriching his vocabulary, having a lovely bonding time and encouraging him to feel positive about books and reading.

We read exciting chapter books at bedtime. Ds then takes the book to read the start of the next chapter... It seems to be working!

BackingVocals good spot. I wonder if those choose your own adventure books would work because they're more about doing than remembering.

Love the whiteboard in the loo idea though it might be a bit high maintenance for us! When they were younger, it was amazing how my 2 persevered to decode notes such as "help yourselves to breakfast and put the tv on" of a weekend morning :)
