Tidy hair for school

aliphil · 08/09/2016 10:07

DD is starting reception. She has quite fine wispy hair, between chin and shoulder length. I don't know if it's long enough for the school to insist it's tied back, but she wants it to be anyway. How can I do it and make it look halfway decent? It ends up with bumps on top of her head, wisps that are too short sticking out, and the clip I use for her not-quite-grown-out fringe looks wrong and doesn't stay in very well.

Something very simple would be good, please, as I am pretty clueless on hairstyles. And something that doesn't require putting any kind of gunk on, as I think that's ridiculous for a 4yo. Thanks in advance ...

Ace calm down. "Flabbergasted" and "Appalling" is over the top.

Midnite wasn't as rude as you're making out. Sometimes, humour is misconstrued when it's written down and not spoken. I think she meant it light heartedly.

nooka · 09/09/2016 07:48

Crazzy your dd's hair looks lovely, but to me it looks like something someone would do for a very special occasion, like maybe a wedding where your dd was the bridesmaid. The OP asked for something very simple, your picture really really didn't look like it fitted the bill.

OP do you think your dd would accept an Alice band approach? Cutting my dd's hair into a bob was the best thing we did. All the photos we had before that and she looks like she was dragged through a bush! I'm not sure why the default for young girls is long hair, it's very unpractical.

CRazzyyAce · 09/09/2016 07:50

There's no need to be so judgemental and making uncalled comments. There was even a thread the other day about how nasty some MN users were, it's becoming far too common that people post without thinking to someone who may have MH problems,PND, breavement etc and they just go on the attack on a stranger for no reason.

VioletBam · 09/09/2016 07:51

Crazzy don't come on then if it's that bothersome. I'm afraid that this is the internet at the end of the day.

If you can't take the odd mean comment, you probably shouldn;t be here.

CRazzyyAce · 09/09/2016 07:55

Now I've been referred to as school snobby Jeeze if you knew me I rarely style DD it was her first day of nursery, I found a simple style and it is simple if you watch the video it's easy to do. I'm rubbish styling her hair but wanted as it was hot day yesterday. I don't appreciated being attacked. I've actually got a lot on with a baby who has health problems and feel particularly low in mood since having him and I was looking forward to her first day and tried to be helpful and all I got was a lot of women looking to have ago.

CRazzyyAce · 09/09/2016 07:56

Violet it doesn't give people the right to be bitchy to strangers for no reason

TheDowagerCuntess · 09/09/2016 08:01

Crazzy - no-one's being bitchy. Flowers

I think most of us just did a 😵 face on getting to your post. I couldn't replicate that do on my DD in a million years!

The OP specifically said something very simple please, as she is clueless with hairstyles.

whywonthedgehogssharethehedge · 09/09/2016 09:36

Bunches. If longer pony tail. That's been my entire repetoire for 12 years. If I'm going crazy I might do a plait.

Theask · 09/09/2016 09:45

I think it should be a rule of thumb that if you have to watch a video telling you how to do it then its probably not a simple style Confused

Crazy would you like to come and do my hair? :) I wish I could do styles like that!

GoblinLittleOwl · 09/09/2016 09:52

You do realise that all these beautiful hairstyles will be systematically destroyed by their owners and rearranged by bestfriends playing hairdressers!

aliphil · 09/09/2016 11:21

Thanks everyone. I managed to make it look tidyish for her first day (because photos!) by using a lot of water, but I think I shall go and see if Sainsburys do Alice bands in school colours.

Crazzy your daughter's hair looks amazing but I could never manage that in a million years! A friend has offered to teach me French plaits and I find that quite scarily complicated! To illustrate my cluelessness, my hair is a chin length bob. I brush it every day and wash it every few days, and that's my limit.

DD says she wants to do ballet. I said not the term she starts school, especially as she's recently had an operation so a lot going on. I'm really hoping she forgets, because ballet hairstyles terrify me.

god ballet hairstyles are terrfying. There is usually one mum who is brilliant at it though, just get her to do it.

MirrorMirrorOnTheFloor · 09/09/2016 11:54

For stretchy Alice bands in school colours search eBay for 'dance hair band navy/ red/ black' depending on what colour you need. We have four blue ones for school and a pink one for ballet!

HateSummer · 09/09/2016 11:57

crazzzy how long did it take you to do that hairdo on your dd in the morning? The best I manage with dd (8) is two French plaits or a French side plait and that takes 10 mins.

CreamCrackerundertheSettee · 09/09/2016 12:07

My dd1 has v soft, fluffy hair and it was chin length on starting reception. Nits tend to be rife in KS1 so as much hair you can tie back the better! I used to do tiny bunches.

If she has a fringe that is flopping in her eyes you can do a plait which is a sort of half french plait to secure the hair away.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 09/09/2016 12:50

Our ballet teachers did the buns for exams and the rest of the time they just had to be tied back. Alternatively persuade her that tap and street dance are much cooler!

M and s and supermarkets do school coloured hair stuff or eBay. Some sellers on local Facebook sites do head bands to match uniform, looks tidy with little effort. Don't be put off ballet - ponytail and pay £1 on exam day to have it done by a retired lady - all pins/nets included. I do think it would be a good busy opportunity for a hairdresser showing clueless people how to do simple Styles half day courses! My niece had to slowly demonstrate French plaiting.

toffeeboffin · 09/09/2016 21:06

I'm sorry but those donut bands that crazzzy mentions are actually very easy to use, so you are all wrong!

Takes far less than ten minutes.

And as you've all said, it looks amazing.

TheDowagerCuntess · 09/09/2016 21:07

The donuts are dead easy - but your hair has to be significantly longer than just below chin length!

nooka · 10/09/2016 06:15

It wasn't the donut style that caused the comments though toffeeboffin. Her first picture showed her dd with a lovely but very complex looking hairstyle. If she had posted it on a different thread I'm sure there would have been lots of complimentary comments.

Theask · 10/09/2016 11:30

Those donut things look ridiculous, particularly on little girls
