My 6yr old DD has not had a teacher for longer than a few months at a time since she started school and the whole class are really behind! (a rant and advice, please)

I would ptactise all the phonic sounds with your daughter - make or buy some flash cards with them on (jolly learning sells some), I would practise key words by look and say (flashcards). I would practise counting in 1, 2, 10s and 5s and practise number bonds to 10 (ie 3+7, 4+6 etc). The bob books by Bobby Maslen are on sale from amazon - they are little america (mom etc) but are great phonic based reading books.

All I can say to you is try reading with her at home,MY DD2 had a bad year last year and has made good progress this year(and I mean good) Just do lots of talking and simple sums, talking about the day, weather, date ie Short date long date ie 30.1.07 opposed to 30 sept 2007 etc. Talk to her about money and about what she is reading(I presume she is reading?). As a parent there is a lot you can do without being the pushy parent!

Aimsmum - if you really want to know what they should be doing you can always go on the DFES website and you can find out all of the areas that should be covered on a year group basis, I don't know if it covers Scotland as well.
I have often found that when visiting friends in different parts of the country that their children in the same year group as mine, were all doing the same type of work and that the homework has been very similar.
I have a child in yr 2, so will check what we have been doing for homework and will post back to you.

DS is in Y1 which I think is the equivalent. I think the money idea is a good one. Talk about the value of coins - one of DS's homeworks was coin rubbing. They also practice counting in 2s and 10s. And he had recent homework on doubling.

I would say though that reading is something that benefits from regular practice. How far behind is your DD? When DS doesn't have a school reading book for whatever reason we read the M&S First Readers or the Ladybird Read it Yourself books.

The other thing I would say though is to try and get more answers out of the school.
