While we're talking about discos for young children...

... if your child normally had a swimming lesson when the disco is on, would you let him/her go to the disco or to the lesson?

A friend has not even discussed it with her dd that the disco is on, just assumes that the dd should go to her swimming.

I would let them go to the disco , as a treat.

Hulababy · 26/01/2007 14:27

If the disco is a one off thing and all their friends are going, and they want to - then yes, I'd let them miss the occasional extracurricular activity for it.

Swimming is important yes, but so is having a good time with friends - at any age!

WigWamBam · 26/01/2007 14:28

I guess your friend has had to pay for the swimming lessons, so doesn't want to let her dd miss them because of that?

Regardless of whether I'd paid or not, I'd ask what my dd wanted to do, and would go along with whatever she decided.

itsmeNDP · 26/01/2007 14:31

I'd ask them which they'd prefer to do and be prepared to sacrifice the swimming lesson if they wanted to do the disco thing instead

TrinityRhino · 26/01/2007 14:32

I agree, same as wigwam

wurlywurly · 26/01/2007 14:32

i would give them the choice, if they would prefer swimming to the disco for that night then fine, ds1 is not one for dancing and would there fore enjoy his swimming lesson more.

emkana · 26/01/2007 14:32

I find it a bit sad for the dd because she's a bit of a loner anyway and an only child, the disco would be a good chance with her to be with her friends from school.

The swimming lesson - because I would have paid in advance, and because if I didn't take one child swimming because he had a school disco to attend, my other two would be missing their swimming lesson for nothing.

Hallgerda · 26/01/2007 14:35

emkana, if your friend's child is a bit of a loner, perhaps she would hate the disco - have you considered the possibility that her mother is helping her out with a socially acceptable excuse?

SKYTVADDICT · 26/01/2007 14:36

Our disco coincides with gymnastics on a Friday night once every term. The DDs always go to the disco, but then again I help run it so it wouldn't be feasible to be running around

singersgirl · 26/01/2007 14:41

This exact thing happened when it was DS2's last school disco (Y1). I asked him whether he wanted to go to his swimming lesson or to the disco, and he chose the swimming lesson! So perhaps the daughter really would prefer swimming.

princessmel · 26/01/2007 14:45

I would give them the choice aswell.

wurlywurly · 26/01/2007 14:48

i miss school discos, trying to sneak in a bottle of cider without the teachers seeing, then letting your boyfriend (who want allowed to come cos they was expelled/went to a different school\ too old)in thru the fire exit, then trying to sober up and take off the make-up that you wasnt supposed to be wearing before your parents came to pick you up.

Those were the days.

wurlywurly · 26/01/2007 14:51

id ds1 ever has a school disco i'm gonna have to offer to help out, that would be soooo cool.

TenaLady · 26/01/2007 14:52

Disco, cant beat a good shin dig once in a while. Swimming you can do anytime

Spidermama · 26/01/2007 14:55

Last time we had a disco at the primary school the parents hogged the dancefloor and drank too much wine. The kids stood around the edges looking nervous.

We're all so starved you see. We can't help ourselves.

Want to dance. Need to dance. Got to dance.

princessmel · 26/01/2007 16:20

Wurly Wurly, your description of school discos is just like my memories of them, especially the cider!. I'm in the south east too and the same age as you. I wonder if you were at the same school as me.

wurlywurly · 26/01/2007 16:22

maybe we should have a MN school disco?

princessmel · 26/01/2007 16:59

Thats a good idea!!

wurlywurly · 27/01/2007 09:31

we can get someones dad to do the disco, sell sweets and have no alcohol, (well that was how my school disco was)
