in our school when I checked a handful of KS 2 children's jumpers and cardigans were there not small kids ones.

I have no doubt that my child is a dolly day dream who will no doubt cost me a small fortune in lost cardigans, gloves, hats, scarves, PE kits, water bottles etc over the next 10 years. My sister was the same.

My issue is when other parents keep my child's, very clearly marked, property rather than going and finding their own or not labeling in the first place.

mrz, that's because genuine parents have already looked for dc's ones and haven't found theirs in there. Naughty parents have already gone through them and taken good quality ones(which doesn't belong to their dc) out already.

OrangeSquashTallGlass · 21/07/2016 13:16

Writing inside the sleeve is only good if you or your DC is the one looking for the jumper though - it won't really help other people reunite owner and jumper. As a teacher if I saw that jumper I would check the neck and side seams (where labels are) but not inside the sleeves. I would then conclude it was unnamed and send it to lost property.

mrz · 21/07/2016 16:29

No they haven't not a single unnamed item has been collected since Christmas.

SavoyCabbage · 21/07/2016 16:29

Exactly Orange. It has to be easy for the child to spot and for anybody else who comes across it so it doesn't end up in lost property. I reckon people who take things are doing so because they have lost something themselves and think that the item they are taking from lost property hasn't got a name on.

My oldest is twelve and she is ridiculously careless and we've never lost anything at school.

spanieleyes · 21/07/2016 16:31

We have a parent who has their child's name professionally embroidered under the school badge in matching colours, looks neat and tidy and can't be removed!

mrz · 21/07/2016 16:34

Our school cardigans and sweatshirts have the child's name machine embroidered on the rib ... We've known parents cut this off

The Sharpie labelling in the sleeve works when retrieving stolen accidentally swapped garments. It's not instead of clearly marking the lapel.

Is it possible to have initials embroidered on the outside of the jumper/cardigan (underneath or opposite side to school logo iykwim) This is something that some parents do at the school I work at and it is actually a service offered by the company that supplies the uniform

DelphiniumBlue · 21/07/2016 17:30

On a similar thread, someone recommended sewing ( embroidering) child's name on the front, near the logo. I thought that was a great idea.
In my school, I'd say more than half the jumpers are not labelled at all. The children tell them apart by sniffing them!

LifeIsGoodish · 21/07/2016 18:20

Miaow for dark garments I use silver pens. They need to be refreshed more often than Sharpie.

There are metallic Sharpies, but I've not tried them. Yet!

Wigeon · 21/07/2016 18:31

DD seemed to be haemorrhaging cardigans, until I discovered that the teacher made them out their cardigans in their PE kit if they took them off during the day. So all her cardigans migrated their way there, until I released them and took them home again to begin the weekly migration back into the PE kit.

Is it possible that's where your DC's cardigans are?

DullUserName · 21/07/2016 23:11

I've got 2 unnamed cardigans and a brand new PE shirt in my classroom. They all deny ownership. I'm asking twice daily this week.

As a parent as well as a teacher...
Black or silver Sharpie, along an inside hem, collar or cuff. Big letters. Check if it's wearing off. Have lost just one jumper in primary from my 2 DCs and nothing at secondary so far (y8 and y11).

smellyboot · 21/07/2016 23:57

The iron on ones do not come off ever if put on properly as they weave into the fabric. We are a school of 750 and with 2 DC I have only ever lost one pair of trousers in nursery. I iron on name in hem and on collar.
We always have a mountain of unclaimed unnamed stuff. Lots will have faint biro on label and lots nothing.

Arkwright · 22/07/2016 08:18

How can your child have lost so many cardigans. My youngest has just finished Year 6 my oldest Year 8. In all that time we lost one cardigan that reappeared a few months later. I think it fell down behind a cupboard.

If they ever came home without one they got sent straight back in to find it.

Ginmummy1 · 22/07/2016 08:36

I'm with Arkwright on this. Teach the child not to leave their cardigan lying around. Send them back into school if they come out without it. Put in place consequences for losing it.

If it never goes home with another child, another unscrupulous parent won't have the opportunity to relabel it for their own child.

user789653241 · 22/07/2016 08:58

Not in my ds's case, Ginmummy.
He took it off and put it in the jumper box in the class room. He couldn't find his one when he went back to get it before end of the day. I went into the class room with him and looked for it myself. There were about 3 jumpers in it, all torn/chewed/stained.
I had to tell him not to put in it anymore.

Ginmummy1 · 22/07/2016 10:13

Irvine, I agree that the jumper box sounds like a terrible idea! I'm not surprised you advised your DS not to use the box.

In bag or tray or stuffed inside coat sleeve would do the job, I'd think.
