They can use whatever terminology they like during the year, it's only the assessment of the goals at the end of the year that has to be reported as emerging/expected/exceeding.

Getting 'exceeding' is mostly to do with age and development rather than particular 'hard work' on the part of the child.

Just got dd's report this morning. She's missed 24% of school due to illness and had an attendance of 76% which is of course bad but school understanding.
She got all 2's which is expected apart from a 3 which is exceeding in "exploring and using media and materials " and had an excellent report so the figures to me are more for the school as I'm proud of how she's done anyway.
I can't imagine anyone in dd class getting 17 exceeding but you never know, it's a remarkable achievement! So well done :)

I agree eyfs is a lot about what the teacher sees/documents. Dd is in nursery and eg can read simple words. They havent noticed and she is marked as 30-50 for this area.
I think the school you can put your own observations so then its a lot about parental effort

Bunnyjo · 15/07/2016 22:41

My DS got exceeding across all 17 areas. He is also a summer-born (May) and, obviously, a boy.

I am just happy that he's obviously settled into school wonderfully. At this stage it is merely an added bonus that he appears to be taking after his older DSis, who is also exceeding expectations at school.

Floggingmolly · 15/07/2016 22:59

What on earth are the 17 areas Reception children are being tested on?? Shock
Surely being able to do up buttons and all that malarkey have to be part of it? In which case it just demonstrates that they're developing normally; their future careers as brain surgeons and rocket scientists are not not assured... Confused

mrz · 16/07/2016 05:49

Doing up buttons comes under physical development with overlap into personal development
The prime areas of development are Speaking and listening/communicating - physical development - personal social & emotional development

insancerre · 16/07/2016 06:04

Floggingmolly
They are not being tested
They are being assessed
Its not really the same

RozzlePops · 16/07/2016 06:46

My DD got 15/17 exceeded, we are delighted. Her teacher is a regional assessor, she has only known 1 child to get 17/17 in 5 years, so yes it's very good.

PrincessHairyMclary · 16/07/2016 07:34

FYI my DD who received exceeding in all 17 areas of the EYFS came home with her Year 1 report and received 3x areas of mastery and 4x areas of secure. She's a September baby and an excellent reader both of which help I'm sure.

mrz · 16/07/2016 16:01

As a Y1 teacher I'm struggling to think of the 7areas Hmm

validusername · 16/07/2016 18:15

DS finished reception last year meeting all expectations, not exceeding. He is summer born and started at a new school where he didn't know anyone.

He came home with his year 1 report yesterday and is exceeding expectations all round, having made 9 points progress against the expected 6.

So of course whilst exceeding is of course fabulous, it doesn't mean your child won't be at some point.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 18/07/2016 12:06

It is high, of course. Something like 1 in every 50 children.

wish my son had got exceeding. He got emerging in all but 2 criteria. I am speaking to the SENCo this afternoon. She is keen not for him to have this EHC plan, but I think he needs it.

user789653241 · 18/07/2016 17:20

mrgrouper, hope meeting went well.
Honestly, I wouldn't worry at this stage, unless you have clear concern about your ds for something. Isn't he just not ready yet?

My ds is winter born, so he was one of the old ones. By the time he was 4, he wasn't speaking to any children. He was selective mute. He didn't exceed in everything in reception. Now in yr3, he is doing very well.
One of his classmate who exceeded in everything in reception is not even on top table or second table. Some children are just early developers.

I can understand reading MN makes you worry. But most children here are not representing majority of children in real life.

mrgrouper · 18/07/2016 18:56

I am extremely worried. The teacher said there was not enough evidence to apply for a EHC yet and she warned me it is a lengthy court process.
I have spoken to him about repeating reception but he is adamant he wants to start Year 1.
I am now spending an hour a day teaching him, and even more in the holidays. I do not care if he does not like reading he is going to have to do it. I blame myself really as I did not take the whole reception year seriously enough.
Oh and he now has an imaginary friend who has said I am going to die very soon. Nice.

PrincessHairyMclary · 18/07/2016 19:07

Mrz I was referring to reading, writing, maths, PE, humanities, creative arts and Science as the 7 areas reported on DDs end of year report. Just trying to give an example of how a child with 17x exceeding at EYFS progresses although ofcourse every child is different.

mrz · 18/07/2016 20:59

So the area's your child's school choose to report on?

needanewjob · 18/07/2016 21:05

I work at a primary. It's a lovely report but I'd not read too much into it at this stage. Your child has obviouly settled well and shows signs of being comfortable and able at school. However these are not GCSEs and at this age development between children varies widely.... A child that is emerging at this age could well be very academic later on.

Floggingmolly · 18/07/2016 21:20

I love the notion of a Year 1 child "mastering" humanities, creative arts and science. I shouldn't laugh, I really shouldn't...

PrincessHairyMclary · 18/07/2016 21:45

What do other schools do? I assumed they would have been similar.

Ofcourse she hasn't mastered humanities, creative arts or science. But her knowledge has met and exceeded what is expected at the end of the year 1 curriculum or so her teacher has assessed, it's a silly word but the one the school chooses to use in old levels she would, I expect be at the top end. Regardless it doesn't really matter as a lot can change, as I said I was simply trying to give an example.

mrz · 19/07/2016 06:44

Other schools use the national curriculum subjects plus RE
English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art, Music, PE, Computing, Design and Technology, RE PSHE, MFL
