Year 1 spelling lists

Our 5yr old daughter (yr 1) has started bringing spelling lists home this month. I am unsure about them and think the list may be too hard - but I am not a teacher.

Are the following suitable for a 5year old: finally, because, suddenly, however, which, once, lived, although, through, though? Last week they had: battlements, port cullis, rampart, motte, bailey, drawbridge, castle, knight. This was a topic related list and I had a very worried daughter who didn't want to go to school. The first week was much better: feet, tree, green, seen, week, meet.

Her reading level has been described as average. The words on this weeks list are not yet covered in her reading books - but maybe learning more difficult spellings will help?

My dd has spelling lists every week, last week they were: this, all, bed,big and can't. Personally I think the ones you have mentioned are ridiculous for yr 1. Can you speak to the teacher?

Complete rubbish, Deedeeshay! (the spellings, not you!)

What kind of school is it?

They are mad and certainly not from either Jolly Learning or the NC frequently used word lists. Are they doing castles as a topic ? Were they to spell or to read ?

Ladymuck · 23/01/2007 15:59

Well we've had:- however, which, once, lived, through and though so I'm guessing they are on a key word list. But when we first started spellings we did have easier ones.

It may be a setting thing where the teacher is strectching everyone to see what they can do and then gives different words to different sets. I know that there are 2 spelling lists for our class.

DS in year 1 brings home 8 words each week. This week they are words (4,5,6 letters) that begin with BR or BL

Bozza · 23/01/2007 16:07

DS has brought spellings home for the first time this week. He is Y1. They all contain "th".

this
then
them
than
that
with
brother

Something like that. So the only one that was at all difficult (other than completely forgetting what he was practicing and just writing out the previous word because he was daydreaming) was brother.

Thank you for all the feedback - They have 3 sets of spellings for the class, depending on which group they are in. Maybe they are setting the level, but I think it is enough to put them off and my concern is the recent objection we have with going to school. I feel that school should be enjoyable for them at this age and they shouldn't become worried about the work.

The Castles list was topic related and they were for spelling, but the concern raised by parents has now resulted in spellings being taken every other Friday - I am happy that they responded to our concerns and had no real idea what other 5yr olds were expected to learn for their spellings.

I help out one afternoon a week and will ask how they decide on the list, so that I understand their objectives.

We are also working on the High Frequency Sight Words (yr1) at home as I am aware these need to be learnt by the end of the year. Needless to say if she shows any signs of getting upset, we put it all away and play a game instead.

Thanks again

My DS is in Yr 1 too and some of his class have started to get spellings - he hasn't has he doesn't have enough words yet and the teacher had said that she didnt' want to give them spellings till they had a certain amount of words.

However I did see a spelling sheet and it was things like "at, all, ball" etc.

MummyPenguin · 24/01/2007 12:22

Those are much too hard for yr 1, Deedeeshay. My DS aged 7 (yr 2) has recently been moved down a group in spelling as he was struggling with them, but they may have been a bit hard in the first place. One of the words was though which I think is quite hard for a 7 yr old. Now, the first week in the lower group, he's been given: one two three four five six. Think the teacher's taking the piss now.

DimpledThighs · 24/01/2007 13:13

much to hard - sure teacher has not made a mistake?

bailey???

LizP · 27/01/2007 13:17

But surely from the teachers point of view getting the children to be able to spell the words when they will be using them for the topic would make sense ? ds1 (who is currently Y2) would have managed the castle words easily when in Y1 and ds2 (currently Y1) who has to make more effort with his spellings would also have managed to get 6 right after a week I reckon. They would also have heard/read the words before - but maybe thats because boys are more interested in books about castles at that age.

This is the kind of thing they are likely to be doing this term.
