Summer v winter uniform

Apologies, didn't grow up in the UK:

Are there set dates for when summer or winter uniform is worn? Or is it a case of seeing what the weather is like? Do schools issue guidance on the subject?

DD is starting in reception this year and most of all I just want to avoid sending her in in clothes that are different from everyone else's!

If wearing summer dress, do they always wear a cardigan too going in in the morning?

So many questions!!

What's the advantage of a summer dress - over just carrying on sending DD in trousers/shorts/skirt and a polo shirt of the "winter" uniform?

DD just changes between trousers or shorts and the polo shirt depending on the weather, simple and same uniform throughout, she's not unique in the class either.

None what so ever. DD wants it because other girls in the class wear it. I notice a lot of older girls just wear the skirt + polo all year round.

Summer dresses are just so easy.... and my dd haspend a number of after school activities and makes getting changed quicker. .. that being said I don't mind either uniform

I've been reliably informed now by school that they start in a summer dress, and wear that until October half term... Didn't realise it varied by school, thanks all.

Need to ask the school as ours is optional for the whole of the summer term and until half term in the autumn term. Majority of girls wear Gingham but at least 20-30% wear the 'normal' uniform of a skirt and shirt.

Pengweng · 05/07/2016 14:28

At our school summer uniform can only be worn during the summer term so typically after Easter break. Normal uniform can also be wore.

So many blanket statements here. Our winter uniform is shirt, tie and skirt. No polo shirts, no shorts or trousers for girls. So summer dresses make a huge difference. And school goes back in September in summer uniform. The only way forward is to check with your particular school.

Round here girls tend to wear summer uniform from the point it gets warm after the spring half term until it gets cold after September. There's very few wear summer uniform at all between the autumn half term to the spring half term. A lot go back in September in it, usually quite a majority, and a fair number will be wearing it before Easter.
Ds wears shorts pretty much all year round. He usually makes an exception if it's snowed and goes through his trousers in that short time.

Some schools tell them when to change, but that tends to be the senior schools.

The senior school mine are at have no difference in summer and winter uniform.

Reception at our school are not allowed to wear summer dresses - same uniform for all, grey shorts and polo for summer, joggers, polo and sweatshirt for winter.

Y1-6 can wear summer dresses though!

Ours is same as onemouse, no rules, wear it when you want.
Some reception DC wear summer stuff in Sept, but mainly as they had it from summer term in nursery and/or are wearing sibling hand me downs. None of the new DC to school wear summer uniform.

We're allowed summer dresses for all of the summer term and the first half of the autumn term. It's only compulsory for the second half of the summer term. Lots of Reception start in summer dresses as the PTA sell second hand uniform at the info evening for parents of new starters so lots of parents buy them then or have hand me downs from friends or older siblings.
