SATS SPAG test is online.....!

Isn't this the one where the paper was online by accident in advance of the test so they said the results would all be null and void anyway?

I think a reasonably bright and well-taught 6/7yo could probably get at least 60-70% or so under non-stressful conditions but I don't know any kids of that age who are able to show their academic abilities to the full for a 45 minute block - a 10 minute concentration span would be more normal. I would expect the average mark at an ordinary good school with mixed ability intake and average levels of challenging pupils to be less than 40%.

But year 5 is 3 years older than the children that sat these tests!!!

I believe the SPAG papers will get harder. Current year six did a lot of cramming where as years 3-5 will have longer to learn all the jargon. The reading paper was awful and I am looking forward to seeing the answer paper/marking criteria when it's made available

Word on the street is that the SPAG was ok but the Reading a killer, and some deliberate tricksiness in the Maths

Reading Test

Maths tests

Lots of vocab questions in the reading test which might have caught a lot of children out and the easier questions were in the middle which might have thrown the lower attaining children off their stride at the start.

The maths and SPAG don't look too bad to me. That SPAG test looks easier than the sample. A few tricky questions on the reasoning papers, but not vastly different from the sample paper.

Remember with the reading paper it was only one hour to read the texts and answer 33 questions - many children found this a struggle.

I didn't think about the timings. Yes it is a lot to process and answer in an hour. DS did finish it but only with a couple of minutes to spare so had no time to check his answers

Especially given the ordering of the questions. Too long trying to figure out the earlier questions (which previous experience tells you are usually the easiest) and you miss some of the easier single mark questions towards the end.

A year 2 child who I the new equivalent of a level 3 would be capable of doing as well as a year 6 child who is working at the equivalent standard of the old level 3. They might get 30%.

I think that my six year old would struggle with that test and she did really well on the key stage 1 SPAG test that was published by mistake and that her school used as practice.

I think there are about 14 marks out of 50 my year 2 child might stand a chance on.

You misunderstood me or didn't read the second part of my post. I don't think many 6 year olds will score more than 50% - those that do will be exceptional.

Between a third and a quarter of the questions are ridiculously hard and frankly it's stupid to be trying to teach 6 year olds about fronted adverbials.

The rest are probably within the grasp of a bright and well taught child under ideal conditions but that doesn't mean that even the brightest or most well-taught would actually score in that region given the exam conditions and the poor attention span of a typical y2.
