Best place to buy 1 Inch Name Labels (ID Tags)

Hello, everyone.

Its that time of year again, ''ugh'', where the school has required that the pupils have 1 inch name labels sewn onto the outside of all their sports kit, bags and coats for the Summer Term (they also said this in the first term but I sort of ignored it - now, I feel I should as other parents have clearly done it as well). So, does anyone know the best places to buy these 1 inch name labels from? Has anyone bought them in the past and so has any tips or advice for where to sew these and their usefulness (I am thinking of labelling all his clothes with these labels)? Thank you

Best regards,

Alice

Will do :). Just want to make sure my son doesn't lose any more clothes (the amount of money I spent on new clothes last year for him..)

I use woven labels ( wovenlabelsuk?) they're great. Come in a variety of colours, and font sizes.
I had Cash's when I was in school 35 years ago!
The woven labels ones seem as good quality, were less expensive, and come in rainbow colours too (probably not of interest for your DS, but you never know!)

@guerre Thank you for your reply. May I just ask you to do me a favour. Would you be able to measure how long your 1 inch name labels are and how many letters are on it, so I can therefore figure out how long they will be with my DS' name on.

By the way, you probably can't remember but were the Cash's ones you had a long time ago good and would you say that they are better in terms of quality and look than the wovenlabels ones?

I have tried asking Cash's but they say they can't tell me and that they want to just send me a sample instead (which I don't particularly want). It is quite important that I know so I can see whether the 1 inch label will fit on some of his particular clothes or if I will have to make the name on the label shorter so that it fits. Thank you

www.wovenlabelsuk.com/school-labels/wl-08.html we have used this company good quality I think for 1inch labels.
I can't recommend their woven iron ons, but the sew ons are really good.

I used another company for a complete set of stickers and tapes, the kit had covers for shoe name stickers (stop them rubbing off) and pencil stickers, iron on labels stickers it was labelsforschool but there no longer seems to be a UK site which is a shame as I would place another order, the whole kit was really useful.

incywincybitofa · 08/04/2016 23:28

BTW The 1inch labels are great for quickly spotting your kids gear.
Our school is vague about where they go- but other schools are more specific, if in doubt look at other kits or go on to other school sites and see what they say.

Alice1221 · 08/04/2016 23:48

@incywincybitofa Would you be able to privately message me a picture of what these 1 inch name labels look like from woven labels? This would be really really helpful. Or would be able to tell me the length of your 1 inch name label and the number of letters on it so I can therefore deduce how long the one for my DS will be.

Sorry- ours are not the 1" ones, but the normal ones. The quality of the Woven Labels ones is definitely as good as the ones I had from Cash's as a child- I still have some lurking in my sewing box!
The 1" ones- is that 1" width tape? With that width, my children's names would be about 3" long (their names are all same no. of letters)

Alice1221 · 09/04/2016 08:54

@guerre yes - the 1 inch ones are the 1 inch width tape. You say your children's names would be about 3 inches long, would you be able to tell me how many letters this (their name) would be, so I can calculate how long it will be for my DS?

p.s. Do you remember your thoughts of having these 1 inch labels as a child, what did you think of them then?

I don't have a name tape to hand to measure exactly, but dd2's labels are ridiculously long.

Her name has 21 characters in (including spaces) and when I had to sew the labels on (in year 3) the name tapes took up over half the width of eg her sports top (label sewn at waist edge, on right hand side, but hers ran 2/3 of the way across the whole shirt, iyswim. Tracksuit bottoms have he label running vertically from waist down a side seam - hers reached practically to her knee!)

My dd thinks nothing of it - it's a uniform requirement. I didn't have external name labels when I was at school, but did have to have my initials emboldened on all sports kit externally, in my house colour. I was fine with that, and am fine (apart from all the sewing!) with dd2's external labels too.

Alice1221 · 09/04/2016 09:22

Really! That's good to know as my DS's name is 18 letters long. If possible, when you can, could you measure or just have some approximation of the length that you could tell me as this would be very helpful. Thank you

Ok, have just measured.

Name tapes are:

21 characters including spaces, all in capitals (as per school instructions).

Full length of tape is just under 19cm. Length of the name/as shown when sewn on is 17.5cm (edges turned under nice and neatly Grin)

It's a lot of sewing!

Alice1221 · 09/04/2016 12:32

Thank you a lot for your answer Pandasrock - really appreciate it. I just have two questions: Where do you buy these 1 inch labels from? and would you recommend using these labels on other clothes apart from sports kit (e.g. coats, jackets, jumpers, etc.)

OP posts:
incywincybitofa · 09/04/2016 13:34

My name tapes are a bit shorter thanPandas , but we have 10 characters, the labels can go up to 22 characters and I bought them from the link above,
I use them on coats and bags, I don't know what your school is like, but everyone at DSs school has the same coats the same shoe bags the same kit bag, to be honest most of them even have the same shoes and football boots, you really want them to be able to spot their stuff easily. The kit we tend to get home in his kit bag in addition to his own on a Friday tends to have smaller or no name tapes.

We did have the big name tags when I was growing up, and I can't say I remember it being an issue

Alice1221 · 09/04/2016 13:37

Thanks for your response @incywincybitofa. Where do you sew the label on with his bags and coats, and do you name shoes and if so how?

OP posts:
Alice1221 · 09/04/2016 13:57

@Pandasrock I have sent you a private message, just to let you know.

OP posts:
incywincybitofa · 09/04/2016 14:10

I sew the labels on the back just under the collar of coats
And on book bags just under the school logo the school bag on a pocket edge
With shoes I use name stickers with a clear protective overlay that covers the sticker the best value came in a kit like this one www.easy2name.com/starter-pack/sew-on-starter-pack.html but you can get them in Russell and Bromley

Alice1221 · 09/04/2016 14:39

@incywincybitofa Would you ever consider putting the label on the outside of the coat?

OP posts:
Alice1221 · 09/04/2016 14:39

as this is what the school has requested

OP posts:
incywincybitofa · 09/04/2016 18:40

On the front or back?
Probably though if the school has asked for it

These requests of labels sound highly specific. Our school publishes a "labelling sheet". I suspect there is one for your school too. Ask the school/other parents
