Would you keep your child/children home from school for a day to protest about over-testing in the UK Primary system?

It's a screening check not a test. There isn't any reason why he should know about it. Two minutes reading lists of words ...end.

FannyGlum · 01/04/2016 21:13

Ok. Maybe it will be fine. His first teacher, a bright young NQT was obsessed. She once sent 3 text messages to parents about it in a week. In October! It's all she talked about at the parents evening. Telling me how ds was below average, showing me tables of words highlighting where he wasn't. Honestly all I wanted to know was, was he happy, did he engage, and he made some progress.

TheoriginalLEM · 01/04/2016 21:23

screening check my arse! its about league tables and ofsted.

Elmersnewfriend · 01/04/2016 21:27

What about the KS1 SATS mrz, feenie? As you say, no longer low key. I have a 7 year old who is never going to get achieved in any of the tests (I suspect is dyslexic, has had a SENS test which we are waiting for the results, I realise it won't actually tell me if he is or not). As parents, would you consider boycotting? Or do you think it's one of those things where he won't particularly notice and we should just go along with? I'm genuinely interested in what you would do / what you think!

Feenie · 01/04/2016 21:28

It doesn't feature in the league tables.

It does feature in Ofsted, and i'm glad - it forced my ds's school to start teaching phonics properly.

Feenie · 01/04/2016 21:32

Ds is in Y5. I would probably take part in a day's strike for kids to make a point, if it was across the country.

Not sure about Y2. My Y2s still don't really know what's going on, and although I think the labels given are appalling, and the tests too difficult, I wouldn't want to draw attention to them if my ds was in Y2.

Elmersnewfriend · 01/04/2016 21:36

That is absolutely how I feel. And with my eldest, I would have shrugged my shoulders and still thought the tests were bonkers but let him get on with it. But like it or not, I will have a child who is definitely not stupid who will have a formal assessment saying he most definitely is "failing" and I'm really not sure what to do!

Elmersnewfriend · 01/04/2016 21:37

Thank you by the way!

Elmersnewfriend · 01/04/2016 21:38

And I realise I have just completely failed my Key Stage 1 SATS with my errant use of apostrophes.

christinarossetti · 01/04/2016 21:50

The Y1 phonics screening is the one mandatory 'test' that is actually researched-based and will lead to children who don't reach the threshold having extra support in Y2 to enable them to learn phonics.

In practice, it's 5-10 minutes with a teacher that the child knows reading 40 sounds/words which the child has been learning over the last 2 years. It's to ensure that any gaps in learning are identified, not test them on a curriculum that was invented a few weeks ago aka Y2 and Y6 SATS tests.

christinarossetti · 01/04/2016 21:53

I have a Y2 ds who will still be 6 when he does the SATS.

He knows SATS exist, but not what they actually are or mean. He was at the 'expected level' for the end of Y2 in the autumn term, but of course that 's all changed now and he may be 'not at expected level' despite obviously having progressed over the last 6 months.

I would support the teachers in whatever action they think best regarding boycotting. They're the ones living through this crap on a daily basis.

Feenie · 01/04/2016 23:16

A teachers' boycott is a different question - I am in the NUT and if it comes to it next year, I will be boycotting. Hope the NAHT join us, that will make it easier to carry out and more effective.

Feenie · 01/04/2016 23:17

You're welcome, elmersnewfriend Smile

christinarossetti · 01/04/2016 23:19

Yes, I would support that 100%, but I don't really see the point of preventing my Y2 child doing the SATS tests (how, anyway, other than keeping him off for all of May) especially as the tests only contribute towards the overall teacher assessment.

Feenie · 01/04/2016 23:26

But much more heavily than before. And the teacher assessment is ridiculous and does not properly match the tests.Spelling is a limiting judgement.

But I agree, just cannot see a way to address, other than a combined union boycott next year, with parental support for once!

Feenie · 01/04/2016 23:29

Year 7 resits for the current Y5 are the biggest abomination - those children will have plenty to cope with, just getting used to secondary. And if they fail over spelling, one term of being pulled away from their peers who they should be getting to know, will not make one not of difference. It's a truly abhorrent initiative.

Feenie · 01/04/2016 23:30

I do apologise for my misplaced comma there. Too cross.

bicyclebell · 01/04/2016 23:37

Feenie - if children missed the SATs in Year 6 - would they have to take them again in Year 7?

I am thinking of deregistering DS or just taking him out and paying a fine for 2 weeks.

If there are any other ways people know of to avoid the Year 6 SATs - please let us know ...

Feenie · 01/04/2016 23:43

Not this year - this particular piece of cruelty will begin with the current Y5 cohort in December 2017. Sample papers are already available.

Unescorted · 01/04/2016 23:52

What is the advantage for the child of doing these tests? I can't see any as they will be retested 2 weeks after starting Yr 7.

bicyclebell · 02/04/2016 00:01

My DS is not doing SATs this year. So he'll have to resit if he fails.

I'm trying to plan ahead and work out the best way for him to miss the SATs - and hopefully not be made to resit them in Year 7.

Does anybody know a way?

How/where could I find out?

Feenie · 02/04/2016 00:04

Whoa - this year's Y6 will not be retested.

When the current Y5 cohort ARE retested, it will be December 2017, not within 2 weeks.

Unescorted · 02/04/2016 00:11

At the secondary school my ds is going to they disregard the SATS results and do the math and English setting from internal tests 2 weeks after starting. DD who is a couple years older had this as well.

mrz · 02/04/2016 07:21

Unescorted the Y7 retests will be December 2017

mrz · 02/04/2016 07:37

Not all secondary schools use internal tests for setting but all secondary schools are set GCSE targets based on KS2 results.
