Class Names

Are most of your DC's classes named after their year/teacher i.e 1R or are they named after something else.

Primary are trees

Simply ash/elm etc

But sometimes they get a mention of their year too.

Ash class (y4) spent last week working outside...

Seniors are year and teacher initials

7ab, 8cd, 9ef etc..

Birds here. Single form primary so not too many to remember, and often just referred to as year 5 or whatever.

They have a different theme each year, and the DC vote on a name. Themes have included sea animals, mammals, space, children's books.

It was teacher's initials, now it's colours.

Trees and it's massively annoying. It changes every year and is so difficult to remember if you have more than one child. It just won't stay in my brain!

Way easier with ds2 school, literally class 1 (reception), class 2 (yrs1 and 2), class 3 (yrs 3 and 4) and class 4 (yrs 5 and 6)

They have reading groups have names which for ds2 is after characters in books gruffalo, zog

Seemingly in the minority here but dd's school is literally reception then y1/2/3/4/5/6. She's in reception but my ds 12 went there as did I and never had names.
Ds in year 8 is in bronte. All form classes in each year have an authors name but never heard of this happening in primary.

When the school I used to work at became a primary (two form entry so including Nursery was 16 classes) the batshit cray head teacher wanted to name all of the classes after birds.

We talked her out of it - remembering 16 birds and associating them with a year group and a teacher would have been impossible.

Now they are initials of teacher+ year group number.

At my current school the nursery and reception classes are animals and the rest of the school also numbers and letters.

It's Year plus teacher initials at ours. Eg: Y2ST

But at a second school I knew, the classes were given a name in Year 7 and kept it all the way through to Year 11 - and each intake had a different theme (poets, scientists, philosophers… etc). I thought that was really nice.

British wildlife here. There are only 4 classes though as it is a small school with mixed years.
It was changed last year from planets - funnily enough, there was never a class Uranus

Just numbers here, no initials or anything added for the year. I do know another local school uses birds. I prefer the numbers tbh.

Just numbers at prep school, then W, X, Y at seniors (so nobody thought class A was the best I think). You kept that letter from year 7-11. In sixth form it was your form tutor's initial.

My primary school had two classes at each stage. So you were either in 5.1 or 5.2.

My high school had a letters and numbers system in first and second year (because you had two classes, one big one and a smaller one for practical subjects). So you could be in 2C.4 or 2C.5. The numbered class was called your 'point class' and the lettered class your form class. It all got more complicated in third year but you still had a form class for, well, registration every morning.

DS2 is just class 2. But the school is expanding to two form entry so they have reception classes named after trees (I think). I think the plan is for there to be 1 Beech and 1 Oak, as well as R Beech and R Oak next year, rather than just have loads of different tree names circulating around.

DCs school has Welsh colours, I've never got a clue which class they're in!

I remember when I first started school it was it was just class 1. 2 and 3,
Then when I went to a bigger school it became class number teachers intinals, not necessarily a number corresponding to the year group as we'd know it now. I guess rising fives/reception was class 1. And then we moved to a totally different part of the country and I remeber going to look round my new primary school and the head saying to me all class names had to change to the year group reception year 1, 2, 3 etc. It was more you'll know this because it will be happening at your school too, and it was.

My niece and nephews school is a single form entry composite class village school and until 2 years ago it was just class 1 (reception/year 1) class 2 (year 1/2) class 3 (yr3/4) class 4 (yr 5/6) now it's woodland animals.

Interestingly both my very first primary school and my last one have also gone to named classes rather than year groups!

Ours is a one form entry school, so we just have Rec, y1, y2, y3 etc.

Ours changed this year ,to year group and teachers initials e.g RGH , 1AB, 2CD, 3BJ etc..

Previously we had colours in KS1, and class 1,2,3 etc in KS2

I think it's a much better way now.

Infant school (where I work) - animals/birds. Chosen by the classes 3 or 4 years back. Retained by the classroom itself, doesn't move on with the children iyswim. Many of us still use the class numbers too.

DD's secondary - year number, followed by one of the following letters VWXYZ
DD's previous primary - names after the year group it was - one form entry, so PP1, PP2, PP3, P1, etc. (PP - pre prep, P - prep)
