Y1 homework - what do yours get?

Can you tell me what your Y1 DC's are getting

Y1 h/w this weekend:
2 x online books (approx 30 min)
1 x online grammar game (15 min)
12 spellings including works like 'ferocious' and 'frustrated' - we've not made any progress with these yet, just lots of tears despite attempting
3 maths problems, very very wordy... required a LOT of help and explanation (30 min), lots of tears
Go around the house using 'mathematical language'

this is on top of a reading book a day (fine)

Does this seem like a lot to you? DT's are completed demotivated, can't attempt it by themselves, and it's eating up loads of family time. Eldest DC (now Y5) never had anything like this...

I've been left thinking are my DT's woefully behind? They can barely form letters legibly let alone do the spellings, and the maths is WAY beyond their ability. I'm now worried they are really behind.

That's a ridiculous amount! I'm a year one teacher, and we expect/hope they they do 10 mins daily reading every night. The only "homework" we give them is 10 spellings a week related to phonic sound being covered that week in school, no sentence writing.

I hate it. The only thing they should be doing is daily reading at home. It makes me sad that they're under pressure so young.

longdiling · 10/02/2016 10:09

Mine gets nothing. No spellings or anything like that. She only gets reading books because I've nagged the teacher for some. I'd say she's pretty bright but there is no way she could spell ferocious. In fact her brother in year 4 might struggle with that and he's bright too. My child in y6 doesn't get as much homework as your poor twins do. Is this a bog standard primary?!

crispytruffle · 10/02/2016 10:12

1 reading book changed daily (if we want to change it)
1 library book changed weekly
1 very uninspiring worksheet which is very rarely marked.

I honesty think we just get a worksheet just to keep the parents who want homework for their child happy (I do want homework) because there is absolute no thought in the worksheets we get.

That sounds ridiculous and a good way to put them off school completely! My DD is in year 1 and has:
10 spellings (only 7 this week as it's the days of the week),
a maths fact to learn (this week she has to be able to double numbers between 1 and 10)
a reading book which gets changed whenever she finishes it so we have 4-5 books a week

That's it. She is doing really well and loves school but is still quite often very tired in the evening. She couldn't handle all that homework and it would ruin our evenings. I'm glad they don't really give out anything more until KS2 in DDs school. I'd speak to the teacher/head about it. This stage should be about building their confidence not stressing them out, bless them

I homework at all. My understanding is that this rule applies all the way through our school. DS1 brings home a couple of reading books each week, but there's no deadline and if he hasn't read them we just keep hold of them a little longer. This term he's had spellings, but again no deadline and we've only had them because he asked for them. There are still some children in his cohort who aren't reading, so to send them home with homework would be a waste of time.

uhoh1973 · 11/02/2016 09:13

We get

  • reading books (as many as you can read)
  • 6 spellings a week
  • optional maths games on PC (30mins?)

As far as I can tell it is the same for Yr2 at our school.

Inkymess · 11/02/2016 13:44

We get reading books to do at own pace. Nothing else. Our school is extremely high performing too

omama · 11/02/2016 23:35

Agree that sounds a ridiculous amount for such littlies.

My ds is in year 1 & also gets what I feel is far too much (although not as much as yours op):

Reading (replaced as often as ds reads them - due to the volume of other homework & time constraints we now limit this to 3/week)

10 spellings to learn each week (these are tested weekly in school)

A sheet of various homework tasks from which ds must select approx 6 to complete each term (research/design/create/draw/ write type tasks)

Online maths - achieving silver certificates in this is one of the termly homework tasks - takes 10-30 mins 3/4 times a week to get a bronze, repeat for 5 weeks to achieve silver. My big bugbear with this is that if you dont get enough points to achieve your bronze by a sunday night they are reset to zero & you have wasted your time.

DS is quite acedemic & generally enjoys doing his school work but I have noticed he is becoming more reluctant to do it.

I was considering doing a similar post as I'm really not happy with the amount he seems to be getting & reading this it seems like its on the larger end of the scale compared to some. Interesting to see that a lot of those with minimal homework are the higher performing schools.

I think back to my childhood & all we ever had at primary was reading - you didnt get proper homework til secondary school. What happened to letting kids be kids, theres so much pressure on them to perform, it makes me so Sad

DiscoDancer · 11/02/2016 23:52

At least ten mins of reading a day, spellings each week (this weeks are days of the week) then reading eggs and mathletics to be done at own pace. Also project work like make/ draw a time machine but had 6 weeks to do it.

OP that us a crazy amount of homework!

Ifyoubuildit · 12/02/2016 13:59

I'm so glad to read this. My DC is clearly getting far too much. I think I will ignore some of it (apart from reading) and see what happens. It's really putting him off school...

Daisydukes79 · 12/02/2016 14:04

My daughter is year 1. She has the following.

  1. expected to be heard reading at least 3 times a week (we do more)
  2. 1 maths homework per week ( we get a sheet with enough for the term and can chose which to do when)
  3. 2 theme projects per full term. You have a choice of three. Usually making something or artwork with writing to support it.
SmallGreenBouncyBall · 12/02/2016 14:09

daily:

  • 1 book for reading
  • 6 words for spelling
  • 2 sentences to write using a word from the spelling list

weekly
1 maths sheet
1 grammar sheet

leccybill · 12/02/2016 14:17

Weekly:
-reading book changed whenever we've read it
-maths worksheet with a few problems to solve on it
-Talk for writing - basically discuss the topic at home so they can write about it in school
-10 spellings; this week's were: moon, spoon, cool, noon etc.

That is an awful lot of work and my DD would struggle with that. We don't get home til after 5 from after school club and she does activities 2 nights a week. Where do you find the time?
