Teaching DS Y5 fractions

Can anyone talk me through getting DS y5 to really grasp fractions? Websites, teaching aides or tips, visual clues etc all helpful. He's not bad at maths generally but there's a couple of concepts (fractions & place value off he top of my head ) that he just doesn't seem to grasp no matter how many times we explain it clearly not very well!. We tried some worksheets without success as he gets frustrated because he doesn't understand & prefers to work independently but I'd really like to try and find a way of sparking his interest and helping him learn.
Anyone?

Early fractions can be 'taught' starting from cutting a cake or pizza in half, then
quarters, and also from telling the time on an analogue clock face.

Gradually increase the numbers: so 12, 16, or 20 friends want to share the pizza, what will the pieces look like?

If he has a protractor, and is starting to understand 'degrees' and angles, that is another way to express similar concepts, and it can also be extended to 'percentages'. The important thing is to UNDERSTAND what 1/2, 3/4, 7/8, 1/16, etc really represent.

If he is learning music, by any chance, similar numbers can also come in as 'time signatures'.

Does he like food?

We do fractions with food. A bar of chocolate is the obvious choice with its squares. How many do you get for a half, a quarter etc. Which pile is bigger?

Raisons, smarties etc all work too.

Cutting up pudding,if you have one. How many servings 2,3,4,5. What about if more people came to eat with us how would that effect things?

If its the basic concept of fractions then little bits and often is a good start.

Wow brilliant thanks everyone - Lego is perfect he's totally obsessed with the bloody stuff so this will definitely appeal. The Khanacademy website & YouTube tutorials look good, again more appealing than listening to mum droning . I'll start with these and see how we go thank you again.
