DD started reading at 2. By the time she went to school she was reading fluently, but had little stamina for longer books - no problem with that, she was 4!

She has developed well, and by the age of 6 enjoys a range of books - Dahl, Dinosaur Cove, Dinoball series, some of the David Walliams books, Secret Seven, etc. However, I struggle to find books now that she wants to read and that have 'suitable' themes in them.

She is quite a young six year old in maturity/streetwise-ness. Would happily watch CBeebies and Peppa Pig and doesn't like princessy things or films. I don't like Diary of a Wimpy Kid for her yet - I feel it's got subjects in it I'm not totally happy with her experiencing just yet. So I'm struggling to find things she can read without themes which are unsuitable.

She loved 'Little Animal Ark' books, so she's brought a couple of Animal Ark books home from school and hated them. I've just discovered Fizzlebert Stump so is reading them, but what else?!

I do take her to the library and she chooses books from there, but we're even running out of ideas there, too.

If she likes dinosaurs the astrosaurs series by Steve Cole are very good.

Has anyone said Rumer Godden? Miss Happiness and Miss Flower, and Little Plum, would be fine for a 6 year old. The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge?

Oh yes, the Wombles are fab. Also Mrs Pepperpot.

Just wanted to say what a great thread. my dd sounds identical to Galena's and these are all great suggestions. Thanks

If i can add one more. My dsis had same challenge with her dd at the same age and she discovered the Usbourne factual books. Dd flew through those last summer and she loved learning from each book - how your body works, how flowers grow, firefighters, London, the Vikings, ballet are some of the topics that she read about.

My DD is on her last of the Ramona series. I loved it when I was little and she has adored it too. Also the Sophie series by Dick King Smith. She's just started Mallory Towers too and loving it though slightly bemused by some of the language!

what about the never girl series, they are about young girls in neverland with tinkerbell and the fairies - I got them for my daughter for Christmas but she hasn't read them yet so I can't say what the content is like

My dd is similar, thanks for suggestions on this thread. Zoe's rescue Zoo get read over and over, along with Battersea cats and dogs and RSPCA rescue series. Also recommend Elspeth Hart books (can't remember author), first one is Elspeth Hart and the school for show offs. Shrinking Violet series; Clementine Rose series; Violet and the Pearl of the Orient; Agatha Parrot, Penguin Pandemonium, Guinea pigs/puppies online, Crabtree School, Daisy and the Trouble with...., Ivy and Bean.

Thank all. Oh yes, she loves Daisy and the trouble with... We've just ordered her Arabel and Mortimer and the Naughtiest Girl in the School set from the Book People, and she's still going with Magyk (which slightly surprised me because she's never shown such commitment to a longer book!)

Dd just turned 7 and is loving the little house books. We read Alice in wonderland before that and we have Peter Pan and the secret garden lined up next. I'm gathering a library of the classics with beautiful illustrations, great fun Smile. Other than that she likes dinosaur cove books, Daisy and the trouble with, charlottes web.

Claire Bean books by Lauren Child

Madame Pamplemousse series by Rupert Kingfisher

Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne

Clarice not Claire! (stupid predictive text )

Just remembered another - the Pip Street series by Jo Simmons are great fun and quite easy but a good read for children of this age. They are funny and totally age appropriate.
