Mums night out for Reception and Year 1 class - fun or nightmare?

handlemecarefully · 11/12/2006 21:01

Dd attends a village school (only 90 something pupils) and Reception and Year 1 are in a combined class of around 26 (I think). She started Reception in Sept.

It has occurred to me that whilst I have struck up a good friendship with one mum, am on a chatty basis with a handful of others - for the majority I am only on nodding/ brief 'hello' acquaintance. I would like to get to know the others.....

So if I suggest a mum's night out at the local pub in the New Year, how do you think this will be received:

(a) enthusiastically
(b) apathetically
(c) with open mouthed jaw dropping horror?

we have been out for lunchtime drinks (well I didn't go but dh did), had a girly night out and then a meal. It generally seems about 50% attendence. I think they are great!

ParanoidSurreyHousewife · 11/12/2006 21:04

We have a class mum's night out once of twice a term (and invite the teachers along). Usually about 2/3rds of us go, and everyone has been to at least one.

We usually do a meal out though because so many are non-drinkers/drivers.

handlemecarefully · 11/12/2006 21:05

ummm - 50% attendance isn't bad at all.

I think I might persuade someone more 'popular' and 'extrovert' to suggest it though to increase likelihood of uptake

do youhave a noticeboard outside the classroom?
the first one we did, we put a poster up to sign up for

popsycal · 11/12/2006 21:08

we are doing a meal for the first time on friday
I would persoanllyuy recommend a straight forward piss up some where local for the first one

handlemecarefully · 11/12/2006 21:08

We don't really have a noticeboard - but I could put a flyer in the children's bookbag drawers I s'pose.

We also got to know the teachers as real people too, which was good. It greases the wheel quite well.

Pub with food sounds good as people can choose what they want to do depending on budget. But do have a plan for how to manage to divide up the bill.

I'd come

my dses go to a small village school too and a lot of the mum's are already in established groups from mum's and toddlers, pre-school etc. So I think they go out in their own groups.

I however am well in with the PTA mums

nearlythree · 11/12/2006 21:11

Most mums at our schools would love it.

Me, it's my idea of hell on earth!

iota · 11/12/2006 21:11

oh no rogue apostrophes

handlemecarefully · 11/12/2006 21:12

lol nearlythree - why is it your idea of hell on earth?

If I don't want to spend my time with the mums from school when they are sober why on earth would I want to when they are pissed????!!!!

(Have to say I don't do coffee mornings either.)

handlemecarefully · 11/12/2006 21:21

OK - mind you for my part I don't know that I don't want to spend time with mums from school when they are sober. I don't know them well enough to determine this, and I guess this is an opportunity to find out....

I would definitely be up for it if i was at your school!
I did go for a night out with 5 or 6 other Mums from DS's year, and we had a great time.

Some won't, some will - but good for you if you take the intiative!

nearlythree · 11/12/2006 21:26

I think it's great that you want to do this and IME would be quite popular. I just wish that when our pre-school does this the organisers would have the sense to back off those of us who don't fancy it. We're not shy, we're not boring, we don't need a lift, we just don't want to do it!

handlemecarefully · 11/12/2006 21:30

Fair enough Nearlythree!! - there will be no 'three line whip' (guffaw at own very weak joke) on this do for the less keen

hmc, I didn't believe for one minute you'd be trying to strong-arm poor unsuspecting mothers into joining you on your night of revelry!

Well for me this is perfect. I work full time so I don't DO the schol gate thing. However I have arranged these nights out twice and they were great 50% + attandence, new friends and even better mums who will have my girls in an emergency

Seriously we live in a village the school is big 350 pupils and the school gates are a bun fight. I love going out and this is really worth it. We did a christmas night out last friday and there were 25 mums across a number of classes (mianly Y3 cos most of us know each other better as we have had 3 yrs together!!)

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 11/12/2006 22:17

I would probably go if someone organised one. As it is I regularly go out with two of the other Mums, because they are my friends.
