Quick straw poll - what age was your primary school child when they did the Titanic as a class project?

Could you post briefly if your kids have done the Titanic, saying their age and the class they were in when the did? Would also be really helpful to know where you are in the UK, in case this makes a difference to curriculum guidance.

I'm asking because our kids' Class 4 (in Scotland, so 8 year olds) have just been stopped half way through their project on the Titanic because one parent has complained, saying that it's age inappropriate.

I'm trying to address the procedural issues around one parent being able to affect the curriculum for 33 kids separately, but it would be hugely helpful to get an idea of what age the topic is commonly done as well. A quick google of online curriculum resources looks to me as if it's a perfectly common topic for primary aged kids, and I've heard anecdotally of other teachers (in the same school and others) doing it with this year group too.

I'd be very grateful for your help!

Primary 5 (Scotland), so age 8-9.

Bin85 · 06/11/2015 06:48

Year 5 as part of a project on local area, which has Titanic connections.

Stoneagemum · 06/11/2015 06:57

I can't remember mine ever doing it (13 & 15) but my god daughter did it last summer in year 1.

annandale · 06/11/2015 06:58

Year 1. I was fairlyShock about that and thought it was too young. Several of the class have had lasting fears about it. I didn't say anything at the time as I trusted the teachers, also because i have a ship phobia so can't be sure of being rational on the subject. Ds also has a mild version of the same thing, I'm sure that's 'caught' from me rather than the topic, but the topic gave him some images and vocabulary to flesh out the phobia with Hmm

Children who follow a personal interest in this could be any age and that's fine but some children are not ready for this stuff and I think educational experts underestimate the effects of learning about these horrific disasters.

So I'm glad the parent protested, I wish I had.

From reception right through to year 2 I think - but that's because any class with DS in it ends up learning all about the things he's most interested in out of self-preservation.

P3 or 4 also Scotland. I'm only insure because I can't residential it was last year or the year before but ds1 has definitely done it at school and he is p5 now.

S2Shock so eh 12/13!
Nephew did it in P4 Age 8

scrappydappydoo · 06/11/2015 07:52

Yr1 (England) but it was in 2012 when it was everywhere due to 100 anniversary. I was a little worried but they handled it well and DD found it fascinating. I seem to recall a rather matter of fact song being sung in that cheery yr1 style during the class assembly on the topic - that was the only thing that unsettled me briefly. Dd2 is at a different school and hasn't done it at all.

Thanks, everyone, that's been really helpful.

Nephew studied it last year in P5, and was utterly fascinated by it. So much so in fact, he would share his learning with his younger brothers, who are now equally absorbed in the Titanic story.
In my own school it's currently being studied at P5 and by all accounts the pupils and parents are engrossed, some truly impressive models have been made at home.
I think if it's handled sensitively then P4/P5 is a suitable age.

dementedpixie · 06/11/2015 11:36

Neither of mine have done it as a topic. Ds is in p5 and Dd is in S1

whiskers72 · 06/11/2015 12:27

Year 1. Both my children have covered this in year 1 at the same school. This is in Hampshire.

Cedar03 · 06/11/2015 12:30

My daughter hasn't studied it yet. She's in Year 4.

3phase · 06/11/2015 13:17

A few weeks ago in Year 5. It was covered in English class mostly.

Hersetta427 · 06/11/2015 15:12

My DD did it last school year so Y3.

mrsm43s · 07/11/2015 20:59

Both of mine studied it in Yr2. Never occurred to me that it might be an inappropriate topic. They both loved it

simpson · 08/11/2015 09:18

Not covered in my DC school but DD (7 - yr3) has been completely obsessed with the Titanic since aged 5 (yr1) and would have loved to do something on it.
