Year 2 writing concerns

I've posted before about DD's writing and school's seeming lack of interest. I'm still concerned about lack of progress and would like some advice on how to approach this with school. I work full time and don't see the teacher, but at the last parents' evening she had very little to say.

I don't think much reading is happening in school. Teacher uses mixed methods I think. I don't really know what to do and fear I have let DD down by not addressing this sooner.

We should be relocating before the end of term. Am I best just to leave it alone?

Sorry, meant to say, this was independent homework that took 30 minutes. She had spellings of France and favourite to copy.

Is it the quantity, content or handwriting which concerns you? Fwiw I'd have been really pleased if Ds had produced that independently at 6/7. He's dyspraxic but had verbal skills well ahead of his years.

Content and spelling I suppose. I think she's often praised for her handwriting and thinks that is the most important part. Her verbal skills are excellent. The mismatch concerns me.

It's a bit too small for me to read properly but from what I can see it seems perfectly fine for year 2.

Which words were spelled incorrectly?

What is your concern? She's 6. What are you expecting?

What is supposed to be wrong with it?! Don't understand what you are concerned about! Spelling isn't bad at all. Were you really advanced yourself in school and you are worried your child may not shine so much? Evidently I have no real reason for asking that, other than the fact that you don't seem happy with her ability!

Unless you're at a super competitive Prep I think it's more than good enough.

belindarose · 05/11/2015 06:41

Thanks for reassurances. Glad to know it seems okay, despite the problems with school.

Will she be changing schools when you relocate? If so I suggest you make an appointment with her new teacher to discuss the schools expectations.
Like others I can't read the example you posted so can't comment on content.

belindarose · 05/11/2015 07:09

Sorry the photo isn't much good.
Thanks, Mrz. I'll make an appointment at her new school as soon as we have a moving date.

I teach Year 4 and for independent work at the start of Year 2 this is very good. Whilst her spelling isn't perfect (and it won't be at this age) misspelt words are phonetically plausible and what she's written is easy to read. I have had children in my class who can't write as well as your DD! I really wouldn't worry, just keep doing what you're doing. If you're really that concerned then bring it up with her new school & see what they say.
