I am after a very old fashion book for litteracy for dc2. (he is at a new Y4 level)
He is on the spectrum and has some language difficulties and I'm trying to work with him on learning all the 'rules' (ie spelling such as 'the i before the e after a c to make the sound ee, the difference between there, they're and their etc...).
He works best when he has some quite repetitive exercises to do so he can really 'absorb' the rule and then think about using it whe he is actually writting.

Anyone who would have an idea of an exercise book that would that? The bet I can find are ones with a few senetences/examples to apply the rules and he needs much more than that.

Try searching for schofield and sims books on Amazon. They do all kids of subject areas and you might have to delve about a bit to find exactly what you want but the books themselves are very good.

You might like 'first aid in English'

Oh thanks, I'll have a look now.

This may not be exactly what you were thinking of, but the Oxford Phonics Spelling Dictionary is an inexpensive and easy to use book, that can encourage children with reading, spelling and writing, and really help them to understand Phonics and spelling.

It covers many 'rules', including tenses of verbs, comparative adjectives, 'exceptions' and more, and is reviewed in the MN Book Reviews section; to find it search ‘Phonics’ and my name.

I love First Aid In English.

WoodHeaven · 23/10/2015 20:03

I'll have a look at those too.

mrz why do you like First Aid in English in particular?

And .... anyone who would know a good ressource to help tp learn inference? I noticed that Scholfield and Sims have a book on that area. Any other?

I was taught grammar using the New First Aid In English in primary school although it's been revised a number of times over the years it still provides lots of practise to develop vocabulary, syntax and grammar. It's an easily accessible reference book with exercises to support each concept.

Thanks.

Ive been looking at those books on Amazon but it's very hard to actually say what you will have in them!

New First Aid in English covers things like parts of speech, similes, antonyms, synonyms, homophones, homonyms, clauses, punctuation, conjunctions, sentence structure ...

I'm not a teacher, so I don't know if this help.
But you asked inference, this is the website that helped my child.

www.readtheory.org/

This is a reading comprehension site. It's American, so you need to be careful with spelling difference. (ie "color" and "colour")
Starts from US grade 1(UK yr2) to grade 12.
Read short passage and answer some question.
It's free, and adjust to your level.

If you have an iPad inference ace is fun (American )
