DD hurt at school

DD is in year 1 in a small village school. There were 9 children in her class last year for reception and this year there is a new boy so now there are 10. The new boy started at a different school in reception last year but after a week the parents felt it wasn't right for him so he was home schooled for the rest of the year. They have put him into school so that he can be assessed and referred to a local special needs school which only takes children from 7 years old and once he gets a place he will move there. This is what his parents have said.

DD has said a few things about this boy such as he screams a lot and one day he was screaming at lunch time and it was loud in the dining room. I asked if a teacher took him outside and DD said no, all the children who were sitting in the same table had to move to another table and he stayed where he was screaming. She has also said he pushes and hits and a friend of DD came home saying he had punched her in the face and she had an accident form saying "another child accidentally hit her".

Today DD has come home and said that this boy threw a chair at her and it hit her on the back. I asked if she told a teacher and she said she did and the teacher told her to wait until she had dealt with the boy and then she would look but she didn't. DD has a bad scratch with a bruise around it on her back and there was no accident form and DD says the teacher never looked at it.

I feel like I need to say something, but I'm not sure what. I don't want to be harsh about the boy as he obviously has additional needs but I don't feel the school are dealing with this very well. Does anyone have any advice on what. If anything I should say tomorrow?

I would ask how the situation was handled and ask what procedures have been put in place to safeguard your child and ensure that this sort of thing doesn't happen to her (or anyone else) again.

At the end of the day your child has the right to be safe at school. They should have looked at her injury and treated if necessary.

Just because the other child has additional needs does not mean that other children have to put up with being hurt by him.

The school need to look at how they manage his behaviour so that it has as little impact on other students as possible.

Not always easy I know as I work in education and Special Needs but it soes not sound as if they are managing things properly.
