Behaviour systems

I detest our school's behaviour system.

The pupils who have behavioural problems either get taken off the system or don't care what sanctions they're given. A lot of the children without behaviour problems are constantly on edge waiting to be sanctioned over something minor which leads to anxiety.

I, and a lot of other parents, have mentioned it to school and school have set up a meeting to discuss it all. I feel like I need other ideas to present to them but I don't know if there is such a thing as a 'fair' system.

What do your schools do with regards to behaviour?

I intend to at forthcoming parents evening.

GeneGreenie · 12/10/2015 12:16

Today for example, up to now 12:14pm there's been 6 notifications of positive dojo points! Just teach my child, he's one of 30 odd, how much time is this taking per day!

GeneGreenie · 12/10/2015 12:51

And the 6 have come through at different times.

Sorry to go on. I still need to delete this, might just hang fire until parents evening.

christinarossetti · 12/10/2015 13:00

That sounds utterly bonkers. Can you get a critical mass of parents/carers together?

Hersetta427 · 12/10/2015 13:13

Ours have a rocket. Everyone starts each day on green and can go down yellow, orange , red for bad behaviour, or up to Bronze, silver, gold for good behaviour. Get into gold and you get a mention in assembly.

As the kids get olderthough they are seeing unfairness in the system - it takes them making extraordinary efforts to get in gold whereas the child with ADHD gets into gold for not being disruptive. They are being to get resentful.

GeneGreenie · 12/10/2015 13:39

It's something hopefully others will raise at parents evening too. I might speak to the Governors about it also.

Y1questions · 12/10/2015 13:43

Hersetta,
"whereas the child with ADHD gets into gold for not being disruptive" = the child with ADHD gets into gold for making an extraordinary effort. Just like the other children.

Yes it is unfair that some children have to work really, really hard to achieve something that comes naturally and without any effort to other children, isn't it?

christinarossetti · 12/10/2015 14:03

Quite. The child with ADHD has made an extraordinary effort to not be disruptive.

Like overcoming, albeit temporarily, the difficulties caused by, em, having ADHD.

christinarossetti · 12/10/2015 14:04

Good luck gene. It's always easier to get something changed when it's new, so no-one can play the 'we've been doing this for years and no-one has ever complained before' card.

GeneGreenie · 12/10/2015 15:48

Thanks Christina.

I think if it was used to reward positive behaviour only it would be a much fairer system. The focus seems to be on the negative aspect of the system. Really feel for the dc tbh.

GeneGreenie · 12/10/2015 15:51

I also feel that whole class negative points is just lazy, it alienates the dc who may have specific behavioural problems. It should be child specific.

heheheheheheh · 12/10/2015 21:37

Our school does marbles in the jar. All well and good until dc had a supply teacher one day who took marbles out of the jar for minor misdemeanours. Dc came out in tears as about a third of the terms marbles which the whole class had helped earn had been taken out because a couple of kids' goofy behaviour. The class teacher never takes marbles out: once you've done good stuff it isn't taken away from you. Dc was very unsettled by the supply teacher changing the rules on them

the dojos can be reset weekly or daily for a freshstart, half-termly seems a long time. I don't spend any time at all on the dojos apart from children registering in the morning and then a short review on a friday afternoon. I tell children during sessions if they deserve a dojo point then they tap their name during break or when they have finished their task. I also turn the sound of and minimise the tab so it isn't a constant distraction.
