For those of you that have been through the process, please can you share or give some advice on what topics/themes come up in the past in the 7+ writing paper.

My daughter can write simple stories however she doesn't go in to too much detail. The ending is rushed because she is tired and she can only do one page A4. At school she has done character and setting descriptions, mainly forest, beach or a school trip. They have done traditional tales and fantasy stories but not much else. Only just started doing letters and reports this term in Y2.

She hasn't done picture prompts at school or continuation of a story and really struggles with this. How did you help prepare your child? Please help! All advice will be greatly appreciated.

Just remember it is not about story length, but story quality. It depends on the school, but most don't require a specific length like an A4 page, story writing time may be as short as 15 - 20 minutes. The focus is on story structure intro, middle, problem, end and interesting punctuation, adjective, adverbs, similes etc. Again it depends on the school continuations are very common and are likely to be varied - lost in museum, birthday party, fantasy land etc. etc. Latymer do pictures to which you need to write a story.
Unfortunately it is all about preparing specifically for your school choice, rather than generic story writing skills.
