School uniform troubles

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with DS school uniform trousers.

His school requires them to wear navy cord trousers, they are 100 percent cotton. As nice as they are, I'm finding it hard to keep the trousers clean, they seem to easily attract dirt and fluff and when I put them in the washing machine, it still gives that fluffy dull look and has lost its shiny sheen look from the time I put it in the wash.

Does anyone know how to wash cord trousers properly. Do I need some type of washing detergent ?

I could keep buying new trousers, but this is not cost effective and to buy one trouser for DS cost £28.00 Shock... I only brought two.

Are you really that concerned about how a pair of school trousers look?

If you are, cool washes (30 deg) are kindest to clothes and will ensure they last longer.

Do other parents have the same problem? If you think other kids' trousers look nicer than your son's, might be worth asking a parent how they wash them.

Always wash cord inside out - it helps it picking up fluff.
Iron inside out too.

Wash them inside out. But cords do attract fluff. You need a lint roller.
Does it have to be those particular trousers ?- I get DS cords from H&M for about £7 for out of school.

Agree with washing them inside out and then hanging them straight up carefully after the cycle has finished. Also be careful what you wash with it. For a really problematic item, I'd wash the (presumably) 3 or 4 pairs together (say on a Friday night) but with no other items on a 30 degree wash and use detergent designed for silk.

Just seen you only have 2 pairs. Depending on his age, particularly if young, I'd get another pair so you can avoid washing them in the week and put them in their own private wash on a Fri!

MrsLeigh.. of course I am ! Grin but on a serious note, they are very very noticeable. Even when DS accidentally touches his knee on the pavement, no amount of dusting it would remove the dust, I can see it very clearly....

Seline thanks!! I washed it inside out a couple of times but doesn't seem to pick off the fluff, I'll try again and I'll definetly iron them inside out.

Bike unfortunately yes..... Unless I can get one that looks identical.. But the trousers has some sort of pattern to it that you have to get it specially made.... Well that's what the uniform shop told me.

help Thanks for the information- I do need to buy another pair and yes I'll look out for detergent specially made for silk.

OP - ds wears cord trousers too. Try googling 'navy cord school trousers' - guarantee you'll find them cheaper. And there are only 1 or 2 manufacturers so doubt that you really HAVE to buy them from the official supplier. John Lewis do some if you can't find them elsewhere?

IME they only stay shiny and lovely for a very short time. Ds's get washed every night because the knees are constantly green! Is your ds new to wearing them this term? I really think the fluff issue is one that will go away - don't fret!

Notgivingin789 · 30/09/2015 11:30

Fleur I've seen John Lewis one's online..but they are..roughly... £23.00 ... I was hoping to find ones a lot cheaper.

That's a shame! As I really liked that shiny look! Yes my DS is new to wearing them this term. I really hope that fluff eventually dies down. Is it okay to wash Cord Trousers everyday?

they wash really well IME. No need for conditioner or ironing.

£23 is the cheapest I've ever found them for TBH. If they have to be jumbo cord, then it's a very limited number of suppliers so there's not a huge amount of price competition.

A quick google shows that £23 is the cheapest price out these to be honest?

I'd suggest a second hand sale at school but they've been no good for us as the trousers usually get worn out by their first owner!

wash inside out and give them a once over with a pet lint roller!
