Does your state primary school do netball?

I'm just wondering if your child's primary school does netball as a PE subject and/or a PE as an extra curricular club.

My DD's school doesn't do any netball as part of PE for any year group. They run a netball club for Y5 and Y6, which my DD1 got to take advantage of but now DD2 has reached Y5 the girls have to try out for the team and are then invited to come along to the club, by letter, if they are successful.

There has been very poor provision for sport overall in the school, so it's rather disappointing to get to Year 5 and find the door is closed to DD2 accessing any extra curricular sports in school. I just wondered how common it is to not do netball in PE and to run extra curricular sports in this exclusive way.

Yes we okay netball as part of the games element if PE and take part in school tournaments.

I agree that it incredibly annoying when things that ought to be part of the curriculum get made into selective extra curriculars.

DD1 has just started year 4 and played netball in PE this week.

Honestly, this sounds rubbish. How are you meant to 'qualify' for the club if you never get to play? I would be 'asking' they do something about this. At our school they play netball in KS2 only. I think they should start in KS1. KS1 they have played hockey, football and touch rugby as well as dance. I don't see how they can provide a club but no class?

I don't think so, neither DC has ever mentioned it (now years 5 and 7). They do a lot of other team sports though.

Not sure if they do it often in PE but yes, there is an extracurricular club for y5 and Y6 children. They also have a team which is successful.

Thanks everyone. Anyone else?

They do netball for a term or half term from Y1. There is a multi sports club available as an extra-curricular activity which includes netball. There is also a KS1 netball club, a KS2 netball club and an invitation-only club who make up the team. One of the PE teachers is a keen netball player, which probably helps.

Yes, not in PE I don't think, but there's a free after schools netball club one afternoon a week. It's open to kids from P4 (7-8) up to P7 (I'm in NI), the P4 & P5 train one week, then P6 & P7 the next.

JemimaMuddledUp · 19/09/2015 09:01

Yes. They have a netball team but also play netball in PE (as well as football, rugby, hockey and cricket).

It is a small village school though so not enough numbers to start with invitation only malarkey!

They do a different outdoor and indoor activity every half term. Fairly sure they've done netball at some point (AMEND - just checked with DD and she says "yes"). They don't have a netball club or play netball against other schools though.

teacherwith2kids · 19/09/2015 11:01

Both - it's one of the 4 'winter games' that all children do in rotation, and there is a thriving after school club (mostly recreational, but a few matches played towards the end of each year).

DC's primary played a netball version of benchball instead (same rules but catcher on a bench rather than a hoop) but had a BIG after school club taken by adults (non teachers) who played netball at club level.

Yes, they do netball in PE and there are after school clubs as well, but the sports provision at dd's state primary is excellent. They do extremely well in competitive sports at county level, and the kids need to be quite good to get into the school teams - no good for my not especially sporty dd. However, there are loads of opportunities for recreational sport as well - the school has a vision that all children will voluntarily sign up for at least one sports club each term, and it think they're pretty close to achieving this, not least because of the wide range of sports on offer.

Yes. Netball in upper juniors PE and after school club run by a TA.
