free reader colours

I have googled this..

Firstly I have no concerns about my Ds reading levels..However I am curious.. He comes home and tells me he is free reader black, was free reader green ( I think) and said there is free reader blue..

Has anyone heard of this scheme. I am just curious..Is it a school made up level..He previously followed the normal ORT colours

Never come across different free reader levels before. Once DSs got to that stage they just chose whatever they wanted to read.

Ask the teacher I guess.

I don't understand free reading colours too.

Free reader at the DC's school doesn't seem to be entirely about reading ability. DD1 came home from school second day of year 3 and announced she was a free reader. Considering she'd read 3 David Walliams in the previous week this was not a surprise. I asked who else had been made a free reader (assuming it would be those in her reading group) and she listed half the class. So, more a case of 'you're now old enough to choose your own books' but for DD1 she is now reading less complicated books (typical girly trashy short novels about princesses and fairies) than she was under the reading scheme (ORT abridged classics in the Treetops range).

All it means is that the teacher has a box of books at blue or green or whatever level and children reading at green level are "free" to pick any book from the green box and children reading at blue level are "free" to pick a book from the blue box ... The who free readers thing is a huge con IMHO

We have a library where all the children go to select books to read in addition to their scheme books, free readers can bring their own books in to read or simply choose from the library. To aid in selecting the appropriate level books, all our library books are coloured by approximate year group. This is to stop my year 6 free readers exisiting on a diet of Horrid Henry books! ( Our children do not become free readers until roughly year 4/5 as our scheme continues until the "old" level 4a)

At my kids' primary 'free reader' means you can go and pick any book fro the library.choosing a book from a colour banded box is what everyone does from their first day. I don't understand what is not a free reader in sine schools?

In my DDs school no-one is classed as a free reader. everyone has to pick from the coloured boxes, even year 6.

His current book is the BFG.. which he has and has read at home..

I may ask at parents evening however as I don't have any concerns about his reading I think she probably has quite enough to do.
