Hate Our Allocated School, But Enough to Move House?

We didn't get in to any of our 4 chosen primary schools and was allocated another school 2 miles away that is located on a dodgy estate behind a really grotty pub.

We lost our appeal and have remained on the waiting list for our preferred local school which is just 0.3 miles away. I was really upset this week to find out that we have moved down the waiting list and are now at position number 4.

I know it sounds melodramatic, but it really galls and upsets me to drive every day against the traffic to take my daughter to a school which we don't want. To rub salt into the wound I see all the other local children walking to our nearby school. We are the first family that this has happened to living so close to the school. It seems we have been very unlucky with the amount of siblings and children in care that have been accepted for 2015.

I feel rejected by our local community and upset that there is nothing I can do to control the situation other than move house. I wondered if anyone has ever done this? Would you recommend it? My husband is keen for us to move, but I only want to do it if we can guarantee that we would get straight into an under-subscribed school and not wait on another waiting list.

I don't believe that we will get into our preferred school any time soon and there is no guarantee that we won't continue to move down the waiting list. I will need to apply for a primary school place next year for my youngest daughter, so we need to move before that happens. If not and we stick this out, does anyone know if my eldest daughter would move to the top of the waiting list as an older sibling if my youngest daughter secures a place for Reception 2017?

Any advice or help gratefully received. Thanks.

It rather depends on whether the children above her on the list are siblings too, assuming siblings go ahead of distance. Even so you wouldn't get sibling priority until your dd2 had started in September 2017, by which time your dd1 would be year 2. You stand a better chance of a place in year 3 as the constraints of class size are relaxed. If you decided to move instead remember the place could disappear by the time you are ready to move. If you find one undersubscribed they have to offer you the place but you need to take it up straight away. It sounds as if that might complicate matters short term.

Can you afford to move house?
