Use the pictures for clues

Got DS new reading diary home, with some helpful hints on how to support reading.
First hint:
"Use the pictures for clues."

This isn't good is it? Can I say something or does that make me awful interfering parent?

Thankfully that isn't an acceptable excuse ??

Not disappointed, catkind; sort of relieved until you got to 'other strategies', lack of phonics books and learning books by heart!

I have picked out the worst bits there. There is lots of stuff about phonics around too. They do apparently have phonics books in school for year 1-2, but don't send them home.

I wanted to volunteer anyway, but this is giving me an ulterior motive to get an inside view on what they're actually doing in practice.

Are phonics screening results published? Can't see anything on the webpage but I'll ask when we go to the open evening for DD. I'm wondering now too.

No - but Ofsted can. I can see ds's school's on our LEA data site. They are DIRE (low 40s).

maizieD · 10/09/2015 23:06

No, the results aren't published. Parents must be notified of their child's result but whole school results don't have to be published. Of course, some schools which do well are happy to tell the world..

The data which is published by the Dfe gives national & LA results and analyses the data by various categories of pupils.

maizieD · 10/09/2015 23:07

But Feenie, I presume you can see the results because you're a teacher and have access to the LA data?

Feenie · 11/09/2015 07:00

Yes, that's right, should have made that clearer. The Ofsted report makes it very clear that the results are poor and criticises the phonics teaching, but doesn't actually mention the exact figure.

Last ofsted said it was broadly average, but as I said that was a while ago.
