How will KS2 SATs work this year with no levels??

DS 1 is just starting Year 6. Being naturally rather laid back and inclined to day dream, he started doing some work during Year 5 once the significance of levels, and being entered for different papers of SATs, dawned on him. I know SATs are really for the school but he would want to at least be doing the same papers as his mates so he pulled his socks up, much to my delight. However, as far as I know, levels are disappearing. I don't think SATs are disappearing, so how will they be assessed? There is a parent meeting next week about Y6, but his school persists in the glorious misapprehension that every household has a stay-at-home parent who can attend meetings at 4pm, and as this isn't the case with me I can't go...

Levels have disappeared although some schools are still using them with a mismatched curriculum!
In terms of 'SATs', Y6 children will still take tests in May which will give them a score/grade/result (?) - possibly as a percentile or standardised score. Draft papers have been released; biggest difference seems to be an arithmetic paper in place of MM.
I'm not sure exactly what the meeting will be able to tell you as so much is still up in the air but would imagine they'll share the draft papers, the test week timetable and their general plans for teaching, assessing and testing.

Thank you PicIn Attic.

Am I justified in being a bit concerned that at this stage the teachers don't really know what they are trying to prepare the children for? I really, heartily wish politicians would stop fiddling about with education, and most crucially that if they need to make changes they make them slowly enough for the children not to suffer.

Well, we know what we have to teach, that's all in the new curriculum. What we don't know is how the year 6's will be assessed. The sample tests give us a rough idea of the range/structure of questions. BUt we have no idea what will be considered a pass/average/above average score on these tests. We have no idea how progress will be measured other than that the level 2 the children achieved in year 2 would be considered average. To be " average " on the new tests ( whatever they might be!) the children will need to be at something equivalent to a minimum of a 4b ( however that might be assessed!!)
Presumably someone will have some idea by May!

i've been told be a teacher at ds's school that they will either pass or fail at the end of year 6. don't know if that's correct, or what constitutes a fail.
