Have you done any 'work' with your DC this holiday?

[name changed just in case - thanks random name generator site]

I was just wondering if anyone has done and 'work' (i.e. things they might do at school) with their Infant/Primary kids over the holidays.

For various reasons which may derail the thread and are the reason for the name-change we haven't, but I have thought about it, and may still do so.

yes, writing, reading and maths. Both primary age.

plus days out, maps, activities, measuring, sign reading etc. and hours and hours of cbbc.

No....otherwise what's the point of calling it a holiday?
Kids are pushed hard enough in term time.

I believe it's their holiday as much as mine (I work term time only) and other than stuff we do that's enriching anyway (building dams in the stream, swimming, climbing mountain, having friends round to play), I haven't put any academic demands upon them.

BoboChic · 26/08/2015 15:56

Yes. A huge mixture of maths workbooks and revision of French grammar (conjugation) ie trad academic stuff, "improving" books with discussion of themes, day holiday courses in England and France and residential holiday courses with fun but enriching content (putting on a musical/making a film). Still plenty of time for making sand castles/riding bikes/sleepovers!

DD going into year 1. Towards the second half of the holiday we have done a bit of reading and a cursory look over the high frequency words.

We've done their set homework, which included researching an artist, reading books, writing and drawing about their holidays and finding lots of pictures. We've done no workbooks etc.

We have also been to the Natural History Museum, Tower of London, to Parks, Nature Centres etc. they've learned a lot Grin

TinklyLittleLaugh · 26/08/2015 16:18

No not a tap. DS(9) has had the odd intensive reading day though. Mostly he's done loads of physical stuff, football, cycling and swimming and his skateboard skills have come on quite a lot.

DS is frankly as smart as paint though, and very engaged with learning, so I don't feel at all guilty about just letting him chill.

hibbleddible · 26/08/2015 23:16

Dd has been doing lots of swimming, and is pretty good at it now, though I realise that's not really what you are asking.

We have done lots of numeracy, as she enjoys that. She doesn't see any point in literacy (she is 4!) and has no interest, so other than writing her name we haven't done any of that.b

my2bundles · 03/09/2015 23:38

No, they are small Children who needed a break.

Feenie · 04/09/2015 17:33

Nope. Clue is in the word holiday.

damselinthisdress · 04/09/2015 17:43

No actual written work, but I have tried to slip education into day to day life through outings and conversations. Lots of "why do you think this?" and "how do you think that?"

Feenie · 04/09/2015 17:48

As the child of a teacher, my ds can spot stuff like that a mile off and usually rewards me with a groan and an eye roll (Y5).

MaddyinaPaddy · 04/09/2015 18:55

I have been working all hols apart from the 2 weeks we have been away.On the evenings have been doing 11+ practice (verbal and non-verbal) so not to do with school really.

Snowfedup · 04/09/2015 20:56

I got loads of books from the library and we read one together every day progressing in difficulty. DS really improved and his confidence also improved - however I'm now left wondering why I bothered as he came home from first week of school (ni) and has been put in the bottom reading group again despite having done little or no reading in class ! He is back on the same books he finished on last year even though he was reading 2 levels higher at home ! He is sad and I am sad :(

damselinthisdress · 05/09/2015 08:36

Feenie DD is a child of a teacher too Grin. She's only 6 though so doesn't mind too much yet.

MarietteLC · 06/09/2015 09:34

A couple of tutor sessions most weeks helped DD with her arithmetic and writing.

lemon888 · 06/09/2015 11:04

With all the good intentions at the beginning BUT no, never got round to to it.

Feenie · 06/09/2015 12:47

Yeah, I got away with it too when ds was 6, damselinthisdress! Somewhere between Y3 and Y5 cynicism set in Grin

nipersvest · 06/09/2015 14:39
