We had a note in the book bag today -

"We will be making Christingle's next week."

Aaaargh!!!!!
It really bugs me - but should I let it go?

any spelling error should be pointed out

NappiesGaloreQueenofFaffing · 25/11/2006 00:10

whats a christingle?

NappiesGaloreQueenofFaffing · 25/11/2006 00:10

i HATE spelling mistakes from education professionals. they should be ashamed of themselves!!!

NappiesGaloreQueenofFaffing · 25/11/2006 00:11

but seriously, whats a christingle?

emkana · 25/11/2006 00:11

I'm not entirely sure, it involves sticking a candle into an orange.

I have done before

She spelled potato wrong!!! And tomato!!

emkana · 25/11/2006 00:12

How would you tell them though? About the spelling mistake?

OP posts:
chocolatebirdy · 25/11/2006 00:12

Is it one of those strange smelly orange things?

hunkermunker · 25/11/2006 00:13

I'd smile sweetly and say "You want I should stick the candle into you? Hmm? Well, how about you spell stuff right in future and there'll be no further talk of "christingling the teacher" OK?"

chocolatebirdy · 25/11/2006 00:16

Should also add that the teacher spelt a word wrong in dds homework book, cant for the life of me remember what it was but was a very simple word. REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to point it out but in the end i kept it to myself! (sure it began with s though?)

NappiesGaloreQueenofFaffing · 25/11/2006 00:16

am none the wiser on the orange/candle whatsit...

but re how to point it out; just do it! see teacher say
'good morning'
her-'good morning'
you-i noticed a spelling mistake on the note little anna got from school yesterday'
her-'oh?'
you-yes. not what you would expect froma school is it?'
her(getting embarrased)-er, no. sorry about that...will check more closely nest time...

NappiesGaloreQueenofFaffing · 25/11/2006 00:17

then stick the candle up her arse to hammer the point home

fireflyxmasfairylights2 · 25/11/2006 00:18

I simply edited it and wrote the correct things in the margin with sp? above the words in the book... It was different with me though, it wasn't by dd's as she is just 5, it was my nieces therefore it would have been blamed on my sister

chocolatebirdy · 25/11/2006 00:21

Hopefully the teacher can speak and will say "next" time or her class really dont stand a chance!

lissiew · 25/11/2006 00:24

yes of course!!! my bf is a teacher and her spelling is awful

Sparkler1 · 25/11/2006 00:27

My friend's little girl came out of preschool today with a sticker on her jumper saying
"I played a Mucical instrument!"

SueW · 25/11/2006 07:48

Heard a teacher this week continually refer to 'somethink' and then 'prospective' instead of 'persepective'.

I don't mind local/regional/foreign accents at all but I this sort of speech really annoys me.

NappiesGaloreQueenofFaffing · 25/11/2006 11:19

think these 'teachers' should be pulled out and sent on refresher courses or language boot camps or something. how come they have teaching qualifications? how on earth are these people supposed to teach our children, when their own language skills leave a lot to be desired?

jennifersofia · 26/11/2006 19:57

Good heavens, do you lot always spell everything correctly all the time? Yes, I do think teachers should make every effort to have their spellings correct all the time, especially on notes home. However, they are human! Also, spelling is something that some people are naturally good at and others are naturally bad at. You can be a good teacher and a rotten speller, and be making an effort to overcome this, but occasionally one slips through. Notes home also come sometimes from the office, rather than the teacher. Again, of course they should be spelled correctly, but it is worth keeping in mind.

Miaou · 26/11/2006 20:02

Tbh, if it wasn't a spelling mistake in the spellings the child is bringing home from school to learn, then I would let it go. When I worked as a classroom assistant I would point out spelling mistakes the teacher made in wall displays etc, which I hated doing but hated looking at them more! There's no easy way to approach it really.

tissy · 26/11/2006 20:08

Christingles

onlyjoking9329 · 26/11/2006 20:15

well i could point out her spelling mistake, but then she might start pointing out my parenting mistakes

cazzybabs · 26/11/2006 20:15

I am a teacher and I make spelling mistakes but am more likely to make typos...it is really difficult to proof read your work. Infact I have made numerous errors on letters home to parents...however I don't make mistakes when teaching the children because if I don't know I say to the chilren I am not sure on this one and I am going to look it up in a dictionary.

kiskidee · 26/11/2006 20:17

emkana, you mean she had a misplaced apostrophe rather than a spelling mistake?

SueW, i thought it was 'prospective' and not
'persepective' or did you mean 'perspective'?

busybusymum · 26/11/2006 20:20

When my DD was in reception I was in as a mum helper and was putting some work away in the children's folders. The work was "Who lays eggs..? nearly all the children had put chicken, birds, BATS, ducks etc. So when I pointed out that Bats dont lay eggs as they are mammals the teacher said "oh are they? one of the children (most aged 4) thought they did so we used that example. It doesnt matter" [shocked]
