Any online games to improve vocabularly for KS2 child?

My DS (9) is struggling to use a variety of synonyms during his literacy lessons. His vocabulary is not very rich for a child going to Y5. I was wondering if there are online games where he could play crosswords or other word games? He is not going to go through the thesaurus and that is why I am looking for games. May be applications to download? Thank you everyone in advance if I do not answer promptly.

am.also interested :) teachers all say read more to improve vocabulary but that can be a slow process depending on how fast/much they read.

Would Spellodrome help or is it just for spellings?

Forage, my DS reads well and nearly every evening but he says not all words stay in his head and that is why I think he needs a word game.

I don't think vocab is best learned with some online resource (anyway try freerice) - but through conversation, books, film, decent tv etc.

After the age of five conversation is much less effective for developing vocabulary ( that's why it's important to talk to your baby) books and direct instruction becoming more important.
The OP asked for games to work on synonyms rather than vocabulary in general..

mrz, thank you, very good resources! That is really helpful.

The school gave him a pyramid of words to discuss with me (extremely small print) but it did not really work for him. They have not asked or checked since (it was last year). School report is once a year which is not helpful. Teacher-parent meeting is also only once a year. That was in autumn and since that time I have not been approached regarding anything mentioned in his school report. Homework is returned at the end of term or half-term without any comments except "good" or "great" or a tick. Does it help us the parents or the child? No.
Yesterday he tried mindsnacks and liked it. :) We also use KS2 crossword puzzles which help a bit. I find them great actually.

Many thanks again everyone.

HowDoesThatWork, thanks for the freerice. What a different way of learning and earning bonus points.

www.andrelleducation.com/product/vcop-posters-2/ pyramids like these?

Mika27 · 24/07/2015 22:58

mrz, I am sorry but I have mistaken the list with something else. It is not a pyramide. Here are the words descriptivewords.org/descriptive-words-for-texture.html

The printout was from another website. Maybe TES.

Mika27, You are welcome. It is not just for kids and can become a bit of an obsession.
