Have my very first parent's evening tonight...

...from the other side!

Have done loads of parent's evening as a (secondary) teacher, but not as a parent. DD started school in September and tonight is her very first parent's evening.

It feels very strange being on the other side. Not sure even what I want to find out, lol!

I am sure she is happy and settled, and getting on well. So what else do I need to know??? Have no idea what happens at a primary school parent's evening.

Er, lots of long polite silences, unless you are going to be one of those annoying parents who come along with a written list of questions .

I'd ask to see your daughter's work.

hulababy · 21/11/2006 09:10

Ooh, that'd be nice - seeing her work She doesn't really tell us much about what she does - other than play time and dinner time. She must do some work whilst there, lol!

Ah, DS1 was like that in reception class. The only thing I could ever get him to talk about at the end of the day was whether he'd had custard on his pudding .

I'd take a good look at the walls while you're there, particularly if you want to know how your daughter is doing in relation to the rest of the class (teachers are not always forthcoming with that information). Look out for lists of children with strange headings (insects, colours, planets etc).

I know that DD is on "fairies" table but at present these are mixed. Changing tables after Christmas apparantly (according to anothe rmum) but don't know if it will be ability groups for anything or if just to mix the girls up a bit. Will be interesting as at present DD sits on her best friend's table - likely not to after Christmas. Going to warn her beforehand, although she should be fine as seems to be friendly with a fair few of the girls now.

We go into classroom every morning anyway (well, Dh does mainly as he does morning run) so know most of what is around. Lts of children's work all over the walls

lol at the long polite silences Hallgerda, that is exactly what happens with ds' teacher, and I find myself babbling away just to fill the gaps.

hope it goes well Hula, I remember that our DC started at the same time (and still smile sometimes thinking of the photos you posted of your adorable dd modelling all her various bits of uniform - ds still couldn't care less about what he wears and I only manage to persuade him into his clothes in the morning by pretending to read the label inside and saying "hmmm, well it's labelled for a boy who is going to see his gran later....can't be you, can it?" )

Haven't had notice yet of when our parents evening will be!

I think you will find out alot from seeing her work as you've said already, and I wouldn't worry too much further than that really...maybe get them to confirm the arrangements for next term so you can prepare dd?

Let us know how it goes!

hulababy · 21/11/2006 09:52

Will do!

Sorry - I went out straight from parent's evening!

All went really well thanks. Spent about 10 minutes with her teacher and TA, and got to see all her books prior to the appointment over a cup of coffee. Lots of work to look at so she obviously is doing some there, despite her one word descriptions of her day

No problems at all - popular and friendly, very confident and settled, happy, loves reading and writing, has done some solo singing and ballet, good reports sent from music teacher and dance teacher, enjoys everything really! Teacher says she has a great work ethic, even though so soon in year, but also loves playing as well as working. Doing especially well with reading and making great progress. We did look through the early year targets as well. Teacher said she was a pleasure to have in class (yes - I know they probably always say this, lol!) but very positive

We knew she was enjoying it and was happy there, so nice to have it all confirmed.

Good-oh!

When we get our parent's evening I HIGHLY doubt we will get the same comment about a good work ethic, ds only showing signs of a good play ethic

lovely to hear she's settled as well as you thought, I bet.

Cod - stop yer bitchin'!

No different to being at the virtual make up counter everyday is it

hulababy · 23/11/2006 16:38

Stop posting if you don't like a thread Cod. Why try and be snidy?

Yes, I am proud of my little girl. It'sd a darn miracle she is here as it is, and she is the only one I am having -s o if i want to enjoy her early school days I will do, if that is okay with you?

Someone asked me to post how it went and I did. It wasn't addressed to you directly so why does it bother you.

As it is - no, she isn't a prodigy or anything, but yes at present her first half term at school has gone very well and she is a very happy, settled little girl there - and that is all I am bothered about right now. It'd be all I was bothered about regardless of what school or uniform she had too.

And yes, I am gripping and probably should just ignore it, but as I am in almost constant discomfort and pain this week - then I shall gripe away!
