DD's teacher hasn't once heard her read

I have recently started a thread voicing my concern over the sets my twin dd's have been put in this year. having been in top sets last year and dropped down to third sets this year with no explanation. Anyway i also raised with the teacher the fact that my dd was bringing home books which were far too easy, the teacher has since moved her up a level, although the sticker on her folder hasn't changed. Today I went in to read and decided to have a look at her eading record, a teacher has not heard her read since July , to verify it i asked her on return if she enjoyed reading to her new teacher/TA she replied that she hadn't yet.
I was unhappy with her sets before but under this revelation I am furious, please help me stay calm so i don't make a prat out of myself at school. DD's are year 2 btw.

No they don't read in groups, I've seen teacher reading individually with other children and other dd has read to both teacher and teaching assistant on a number of occasions. my dd has read lots at home with me and it worries me that this isn't being recognised at school as she has impproved massively. thanks pamina

I think that's pretty crap and you should mention it if only to find out what their policy is on hearing the children read.

dd is in yr 2 and has read to the teacher/TA a few times since the beginning of this term (and at other times, she's reading to parent helpers).

Quadrophenia · 16/11/2006 17:15

Actually what makes me cross is that they do read with the children, hence reading records (we don't have home ones) and my dd has been overlooked. how awful is that, no wonder I had to tell the teacher dd needed moving up a level

Quadrophenia · 16/11/2006 17:21

it's such a terrible feeling when things don't go well at school - I hope you get it all sorted.

Quadrophenia · 16/11/2006 17:29

Thanks

In DS's class they can't move up a level without a technical assessment. Not necc. done by the child's own teacher, but it's very formalised. How can they move a child up without a proper assessment by somebody?

wheresthehamster · 18/11/2006 19:51

I'm surprised you don't have a reading record to fill in at home. How do the school know if there is any reading done at home or if it is too hard/easy or whether to change the book or not?

There is no timetabled 1:1 reading done in our class. Group reading is done once a week.
As TA I change the reading books twice a week (if read), pass on to the teacher any concerns noted in reading records by parents. Teacher also notes in reading record any comments she wants to make.

To move up a level in our school each level has about 5 different criteria that need to be met apart from knowing most of the vocabulary.
E.g. one might be using punctuation correctly (middle levels) or not needing to follow text with finger any more (lower levels).
My teacher might decide to move a child up following a group session or I might comment on the progress made on certain books taking into account comments from home etc and the teacher will consider this.

Every term all the class will have a reading assessment and be rejigged accordingly.
The teacher will certainly follow up if a parent has any concerns about levels.

Another thing while I'm here, our Literacy groups (yr1) are not based on reading ability but, for example, awareness and comprehension of a variety of things literary or being able to express their own ideas verbally or on paper. Things like that.
If your child has been moved around it may be that she needs help in an area like this. The higher groups tend to be able to work with little or no intervention, the middle groups may need help understanding the learning objective of a session and to focus any ideas they have and the lower groups may need help every step of the way.
I don't think moving down indicates that your child is failing, more that they need help in a certain area. (although I know it seems like it - I've been there with my 3 dds many times!).
I'm sure it's been said before but PLEASE speak to your teacher about your concerns.

Not reading aloud in school would concern me alot. I used to hear my form reading 2/3 times a week.

Miaou · 18/11/2006 20:05

Have you managed to speak to anyone yet, Quadrophenia?

Azure · 21/11/2006 09:09

This is shocking - have you heard yet Quadrophenia? Do parents go in to help with reading? My DS in Yr1 has individual reading every day with his teacher or TA and a new reading book 4 days per week. I didn't realise how fortunate he was.
