Challenging teachers written feedback

I've never done this before but I think I'm about too!!

Ds is in yr 5 and dyslexic so he does get additional help in the form of extra lessons in small groups. He did a project a few weeks ago, he chose world war 2.

He did all the research, he made all the notes but I typed it verbatim from his notes and his dictation. So the comment comes back that it would have been nice if some of this was in his own words!!

I am quietly fuming because it was all his words. It's a subject he is very interested in and enthusiastic about. Even me and dh were surprised by how eloquent he was about it, So I can sort of understand his teacher viewpoint. The thing is she needs to be set straight on the matter.

The question is how? So wise mnetters how do I do this with some diplomacy?

I'd go in a tell her. It'll be interesting to know if she meant the contents of the work and vocabulary use, or the presentation and spelling part.

If it's the former than yeah to your son as it was his work, if the latter then it's simply a lesson learnt for you in how to help him.

I'm following with interest as I've just had a diagnosis of dylexia for my 8 year old (not entirely sure what she your boy is a in year 5 as I'm not in the UK)

I used to semi-scribe for DD1. She would dictate, I'd write. Then I'd dictate back to her. This separated her thinking from her writing which helped her a lot, but the final spelling and punctuation were hers. Would that work for you?

I also always indicate level of help given on homework. I think that is the main point you need to take away from this. Had you put "DS dictated and I typed. I was surprised at how eloquent he was, but he is very interested in this subject" then all would have been well I think.
