Special clubs at school

DCs school apparently runs maths, handwriting and possibly other clubs in the morning before school for bright kids for all years including reception. These clubs are a bit of a mystery as they are by invitation only and when another mum asked about a teacher about them, apparently the teacher denied they existed! Both DCs are doing well at school but DS2 who is in reception is very good at maths yet has still not been invited. Just wondering what the standard is here. DS2 can count well into the hundreds, recognises numbers up to early 100s, can add and subtract and knows some of his timetables but maybe this is not enough. I feel bad as I rarely do much work with them at home apart from reading and a bit of handwriting and a bit sad that he isn't getting the opportunity to learn more that these other kids are getting. Maybe these kids are on a different level but it just surprises me that they are already so ahead when they are only in reception.

I'd agree with what the others have said.

Ds & dd are both very bright, especially ds but their handwriting is appalling as they struggle with fine motor co ordination.

Nowfeeltheneed, what exactly is this forum for if not to ask these types of questions?

I believe mumsnet is a really helpful forum in which to ask these kind of questions if you are prepared to listen to the answers people post. My point was that your posts suggest you are not listening to those posters who are telling you that in their DC's schools, such clubs can be providing additional help as well as being extension activities. You seem determined to believe these are extension clubs from which you child has been excluded.

i'm secondary but our morning Maths and English clubs are most certainly not for the most able. We do ham it up about how they have been specially selected, but basically they are extra support, and a way to provide breakfast without stigma to some PP students. It is possible some parents misinterpret this, but quite frankly that is a risk we will take to try to level out opportunities. OP seriously, be grateful your kid is not on the list, for whatever reason.

oh, and btw my own very able dc2 went to handwriting club in primary. It had nothing to do with his academic success but more that his handwriting was so poor he needed extra help. He was delighted when he was able to leave handwriting club!

AntandCleo - I had the same with my DD when she was in Year 1. Her teacher didn't seem to know her at all and described her as 'average' during all parents evenings, which is fine of course but there was no other input. At the start of Year 2, her new teacher reported that her writing level was above after a 6 week summer break without putting pen to paper?!. Makes me think she was forgotten about during Year 1.

My ds1 has mentioned that he wanted to go to this math club that certain people went to, but I just assumed that it was for those who struggled, which it was. A secret club for gifted ones would be weird, if you really believe that is the case, I would ask the HT
