Has anyone had their year 2 child's SATs result yet? Do we even get given the result?

2b isn't an average, in the sense that half get above it and half get below it. In the same way L4 isn't the average in the sense that half get above and half below at KS2.
Schools are judged on the benchmark of a floor achievement of 60% getting L4 at KS2 and now they are interested in 4B too, as those who scrape into a 4 are often not really secondary ready.
Personally I see L2 and L4 as being minimum acceptable grades for a reasonable start to the next key stage. Those with L4B have a reasonable chance of getting a few Cs at GCSE, whilst those with less have significantly less chance of a good range of 'pass' grades at GCSE.
Of course, not everyone can be academic or be A Level candidates, but bearing in mind Bs are needed at GCSE as an absolute minimum to do an A Level, and often As in actual fact, achieving what the government really sees as the minimum expectation, isn't great shakes.
Clearly L2 and L4 have a range from the low end at C to the high end at A so achieving a 2A or a 4A is better than 2C or 4C.
I think the way these grades are often expressed to parents are to make people feel very easily satisfied. I guess it wouldn't be helpful for everyone to be told the likely trajectories from different grades at KS1 and KS2 and of course these are trajectories based on thousands and individuals do out/underperformance these.

I wonder why DS has been doing level 3 papers this week then? What's that all about if it's for year 3?

mrz · 19/06/2015 19:52

It sounds like old optional test papers

You defined Median not average there, Chocolate.

Oh right thank you. I hate to ask his teacher in case I come across as too pushy. But he worries about tests and if he doesn't get them all right (which of course he won't) he gets upset. I'm trying to get him to understand that you just need to try your best, without wanting him to not make the effort at all. It's finding that balance that's difficult..

Could you be anymore condescending Chocolate? Good job we all don't see it how you do.

My DS was Level 2 at ks1 ("great shakes" for him - we thought him brilliant!) End ks2 his attainment was Level 6's and a level 5. So 3/4 levels of progress. Similar results for lots of his friends. (His best friend went from L1 in writing and reading to L5 in reading and a teacher assessed level for writing of 5B. Another of his friends achieved L4's across the board at ks2 and this was a massive achievement for her - I will never forget the look of delight on her face when she told my son.)

We are not "easily satisfied". What we appreciate, and you seem to have problems with, is that a child's learning is not linear. They are not robots!

Note to parents whose children are attaining at national expectations: Don't be disheartened. It is ONLY in Mumsmet land that every 7 year old is a high level 3 and every 11 year old aced level 6's! Keep speaking with school so that any gaps in learning can be plugged asap and keep reading!

Since level 5 was the expected level for 14 year olds (and would give a pass at GCSEs) level 4 for an 11 year old isn't low expectations. Thankfully there won't be any levels after this year to compare.

Roll on that time mrz.
