After submitting appeal?

What happens then? Do the LA/own admission school read it or do they have to send straight to the panel? Do they tailor their response based on what you say or is their case a standard thing that they produce year on year with reasons they can't admit your child, so things like no space, etc...also, will their case have specifics relating to you such as the criteria you were considered under?
Sorry for all the questions! Thanks

I'm the admissions governor for my school (VA) so I can tell you what we do.

We have a template appeal response that we update every year (eg update number of pupils in each year, numbers admitted under each category, last distance admitted etc.). Once we have that template we them tailor it to each specific appeal case - stating which category the child was placed in and why they others didn't apply - and therefore why this meant they didn't get a place.

We then send that off with the form and supporting information we got from the parents to our LA (as we buy into their appeals service). They send all the paperwork to the panel.

As ours will be infant class size appeals we are only really interested in any suggestion of any sort of error in the admissions process in the parent's submission. If there was an error suggested (not happened since I've been doing admissions :) ) we would investigate and either rebut the error in our case if we didn't think there was one, or if there was a genuine error and the error cost the child a place then I think we would have to admit them without going to appeal.

Think Betsyboop has more or less covered it. The admission authority must disclose the reasons you did not get a place, distances etc, so that you as the appellant can see if there is an obvious mistake.

This is really helpful! Thank you both Smile

I guess it's a waiting game now until the school's case arrives...I've got my fingers crossed for an error Smile

Sorry to thread jack.. but how long does the process take .. we had a letter before half term - from the appeal school saying - 'they were processing the appeal and we would hear soon'. .

but I'm finding it tricky to remain level headed.. I keep looking for post..

(I think there was an error -but whether the school agrees I guess is another matter).

Assuming you are appealing for a place in the normal year of entry the appeal must be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for lodging appeals.

Good luck Tigsley2!
Thanks prh47bridge...
if the school did agree there was an error when would you hear? Would it be when they were ready to send their case out to everyone? Or just before hearing?...think this is all wishful thinking

There is no easy answer to that question. Some will insist you go through with the appeal anyway because they think it looks better to other parents if your child is admitted by the appeal panel. Some will offer you a place immediately. Some will want to see if anyone else has been affected by the mistake or if there have been any other mistakes before deciding how to proceed.
